The message of this book can be summed up by one quote from its last chapter: “To minimize suffering and to maximize security were natural and proper ends of society and Caesar. But then they became the only ends, somehow, and the only basis of law--a perversion. Inevitably, then, in seeking only them, we found only their opposites: maximum suffering and minimum security.” It is the story of a civilization once obliterated by nuclear war that lives to evolve into another society that even knowing what was wrought centuries ago, must wrestle with the choice to detonate again. I first tried to read this book in college as part of a humanities course entitled “Science Fiction.” I believe this was the third or fourth Sci Fi book I ever endeavored to read. I was unable to complete even the first section. The frequent uses of Latin words and phrases that are not translated and the descriptions of monastic life assume a familiarity with Catholocism that I did not (and still do not) possess. However, several more years of life experience, and a much more thorough knowledge of Science Fiction has enabled me to at least finish it and, I hope, to glean from it the sentiments I refer to above. I’m still not a huge fan of the book, but I now understand its place in that curriculum. I’m not sure I would recommend the text for that purpose, or to anyone who isn’t better versed in the genre than I am now. A background in Catholicism or at least a course in Latin would also help.

The second in the Artemis Fowl series. While fun, it wasn't as strong as the first book. This book almost feels as if there were two different books that Colfer wanted to write, but instead, he crammed them together into one book. Under the earth, the L.E.P.recon are about to experience a revolt, and they need Artemis's help to put an end to it. Up on the surface Artemis, who is still looking for his father, receives a ransom email, with instructions on how to get his father back. Artemis and the L.E.P.recons help each other out with many a close shave and end up saving the day. Lots of one-liners (but you would know this after reading the first book) and lots of creatively solved problems in this book, as well as some resolution on other minor characters from book one. A light, enjoyable read, and great for James Bond minded folks.

Although I liked this book, I read this after having read Rose Daughter, and, for me, Rose Daughter is a much richer and more highly nuanced version of Beauty and the Beast. This book, unfortunately, paled next to Rose Daughter and especially next to Deerskin, Hero and the Crown, and the Blue Sword - all of which I read before finally delving into this earlier version of this fairy tale. Having said that, I did appreciate many of the elements that McKinley plays with here. I was pleased to see Beauty as an intelligent, educated heroine, one who cannot see her own beautiful qualities until she comes to accept and see the Beast as a humane and gentle soul. That element of the story is what always drew me to the original fairy tale in the first place - the only fairy tale that didn't make me cringe when I was growing up (I was never a fan of Cinderella or Snow White - at least, not the "disneyfied" versions; they are doormats!). Beauty, at least, had a bit more spunk - although in this version, she's a bit too self-critical for my taste. I did like it, but I was not blown away by the story.

What if you are offered the chance of revenge without having to worry about repercussions? Would you take it? In 100 Bullets, people who have sufferred in one way or othered are given this chance by Agent Graves - an gun and 100 bullets, untraceable. Plus the surefire proof that the people he says are responsible for ruining their lives are actually responsible. It's an interesting idea, and one that is carried out very well, I have to say. It's not a particularly uplifting read, of course, and I found the gang-slang especially in the first three parts very hard to read and thus it wasn't that easy a book to get into, but I like what the characters in question do with this opportunity. And there is of course the question why Graves is doing this. I think I'll definitely reading more of this series.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is a cool little book. It is more concentrated on presentation than story. The book is very handsome, black pages, great dark illustrations, which really add to the tone. The story comes in the form of journal enteries, which are broken up by naturalist descriptions of "dangerous fairies". The story is there, the tension develops, but the real meat of the book, for me at least, were the information about creatures of myth and folklore. I was disappointed that the illustrator did a picture of a "Wildman" aka Bigfoot because the creature is so ubiquitous. I also didn't like the illustration for "Cyote" because of the creature's cowboy/bowler hat because it robs the Native American myth of its culture. This book has made me extra excited to the the movie coming out this weekened.

A suprisingly eloquent, lyrical story of his life....

This was the book that started it all for me. I started reading this book upon entering Ohio University in the fall of 1999. What started as an interesting way to fill a language requirement soon turned into a way of life. This book served as a guide for me that taught me the basics of the Japanese language, and opened more doors for me in life than ever imaginable. The book is well laid out, and presents the reader with several interactive approaches to learning the language. For added fun, try doing the activities in the book with a Japanese exchange student!

I first started reading this book when my cat was very sick....I cried so much thinking of her I had to put it down for a while....a long while. Now that's she's better than ever I decided to give it another try. It was awesome and I loved it. I still cried but it was manageable :) An especially good read for animal lovers. Looking forward to reading more of her work.
