Very good start but it doesn't keep its promise. Of course it is very well written. Simon Mawer is a past master at language and is very, very careful in choosing exactly the right word to express feelings. The trouble is that after a while you get the feeling the author is showing off his talent to you. And he'll keep taking you back to that glass room until at the end of the book you can't stand it anymore... The glass room - the center piece of a smashingly modern villa built in the 1920s for a rich Jewish auto-maker and his gentile wife - is the crucible through which the whole story of this family winds and unwinds. There is unfortunately too much unwinding and the plot never "grabs" you. After a while, you don't really care what happens to the people. You get slices of life and just as you get interested and finally "enter" the book, the author drops you and starts on another slice of life. This picking up of the reader and then dropping him off seems to be a rather common habit of authors who like to think of themselves as authors of "literary fiction". I have a rather strong feeling on this point (ant that's the reason why I rated it only 3 stars in spite of the excellent writing): it seems to me that literary authors could borrow a little from genre authors in terms of structure and plot that ensure that a book is a page turner. Why on earth can't literary books be page turners too?

This hisitorical fiction is set in Jack the Ripper London time. It's a fun, quick and entertiaing read in a rags to riches fairy tale which crosses two continents. If you are looking for something that catches your attention from the firt page and kekeps you engaged, but is very light---this is it. Good beach reading.

I do love C.S. Lewis, and that (along with the unreasonable conviction that every book deserves to be finished) is the reason that I continued to read this book. The characters were relatable and the story contained many astute illustrations of human character, but I simply was not drawn to it. Nevertheless, I'm glad I finally made my way through it.

I love Rick Reilly, and his columns fit neatly into the Sports Night category: for the most part, they're about sports the way Charlie's Angels was about law enforcement. Really, they're about the people who play sports, the people who love sports, and the people who live sports. Now, my only issue with this collection is the state it left me in. The columns are in a pretty steady pattern: one funny, one touching. One minute I'm laughing hysterically, wondering if it would be annoying if I started typing up the entire thing in an email for my brother, the next, I'm crying so hard I can't see the pages. And that, my friend, is Rick Reilly in a nutshell. Some familiarity with sports is helpful (as in, you know what the pitcher does in baseball, and maybe you know who Kobe Bryant is), otherwise Reilly gives you everything you need.

What a sweet story! It tells of the special little thing that mothers can do to mean so much to their children. We learn through the prayers of the young that actions can really show a child how we feel about them. Things such as caring, being patient, fixing boo boos, simple interactions and playing together can show them how much they're loved. I think the purpose of this story is to show parents that simple little gestures can make a true difference in a child's life. If you are a mommy, you should really take the time to read this to your little one. It just might change your relationship with your child and bring y'all a little closer to each other.
