I think I've been under a rock for the past 20 years. I was unaware there was a fourth book to the series, and I loved Madeleine L'Engle growing up. I read her like a religion. So it was like finding out your long lost friend actually lives down the street to find the book. Sandy and Dennys were always the most boring of the family. They seemed the normal ones that never got to do anything and honestly didn't seem that upset about it. They liked being normal. So it was nice to see them have their own adventure. This book didn't move me like A wrinkle in time because to a certain extent Sandy and Dennys were mostly spectators in the main action. They were the oddly dressed fans in the football stadium, and that was about it. So I gave it a four, even if a three was probably more fitting, because it was just nice to see my friends.

This is the second novel I've read by Sarah Dunant, and while I didn't enjoy it as much as "The Birth of Venus," it was still a good read. The characters were all very different and interesting and the plot elements flowed well.

Quirky, original book for small children, with excellent illustrations. It was one of our kids' favorites, and they read it innumerable times. Hjalte, who looks like he's about five, has the supernatural gift of being able to pull things out of books and make them come to life. He's been left at home for the evening with a babysitter. As he says: some babysitters are fun, but this one is sooooo boring. (I like the punk rock chick babysitter). Hjalte asks if they can play space pirates, but she just wants to watch TV. Of course, she doesn't know about his magic powers. He goes upstairs, pulls a Pegasus out of his storybook, and they fly out of the bedroom window on a magic adventure together with Nestor, his guinea-pig. The babysitter is still glued to the TV, as Hjalte loops around the church steeple and hitches a ride on an airplane's wing. Then they pick some plums in an orchard, and have an impromptu picnic on the roof. The parents arrive home, and... oops! The babysitter doesn't even know where Hjalte is. I love watching her panic and search everywhere for him, and our kids loved it even more. I'm afraid they must have had their share of boring babysitters. But suddenly, Hjalte and Nestor fly in on the Pegasus, and offer everyone plums. The babysitter looks like she's going to start crying, she's so relieved. But I don't think she ever gets invited back.

Zane is the perfect bad-boy-you've-gotta-love. We know from The Smoke Thief why Zane is such a consummate thief and why he trusts no one (except Lia's mother Rue). And it's easy to understand why he keeps giving Lia the cold shoulder - he understands perfectly what horror awaits any human who messes with dragon girls. And that leads to Lia's other problem - her dragon powers have not fully developed; she can't Turn to smoke and she can't fly; what's the fun in being a dragon if you can't fly?! She does dream, tho, and the future she sees for herself and her family is not reassuring - can she change it? Can she trust Zane? Can Zane learn to trust Lia? They'll find out when they (reluctantly) join forces to find the Draumr diamond - Lia knows it must be destroyed; Zane wants the money he's been promised for bringing it back. I love the dragon world that Shana Abé has created, and she expands it beautifully in this book. She creates beautiful mind pictures of dragons in flight - makes you want to look up to try to see one flying and looping through the sky. Will definitely be reading the next one: Queen of Dragons
