This was kinda like "Flowers for Algernon" that I read way back in high school. It is the journal of an autistic boy who lives present-day UK. It is fascinating how this young boy's mind works. This was a very orignial piece of literature. I am surprised it is not more well-known over here in the US.

i read the dark is rising and the grey king first in this series. i stumbled upon them at an elementary school RIF booksale. they only had the two but i was fascinated by the storyline and covers. i immediately took to will the main character. this remains a classic in my mind long with narnia, potter, and earthsea. the old black and white covers were the best, imo.

I love the writing style of Sarah Dunant. I read her book Sacred Hearts and really enjoyed both the style and the story. This book not so much. The style was still wonderful, but the story was lacking. I couldn't shake the feeling that she was laying modern-day social issues over a historical setting. I am not naive enough to think that issues such as homosexuality and religious oppression did not exist in 15th century Italy, but in my mind there was a bit too much tolerance for the time period. I liked her characters, and thought they were well defined. No one was either too good or too evil. I appreciated the difficulty of women in the time period as religious fanatics painted women as the cause of all evil. And I like how society has a way of swinging the pendulum back when it swings too far one way or the other. And I really like reading about how religious beliefs influence society. But when I finished the book it felt unsatisfying - perhaps there was too much attention to details and not enough to emotion. I like a book that makes me feel something. And quite honestly, I felt a little like yawning when I was done.

This sequel to Whistling Season also stands alone very well. The story is about the Anacona mine in Butte, the miners and the library and its importance as a community gathering place. In this time, union workers could be arrested for gathering in any public place. As usual, Doig builds strong and interesting characters and tells their story. We have 2 librarians, one a former vigilante, the other an intellectual running from the Chicago gambling mob. Combine that with a young sassy teacher, retired miners, mob goons, and union leaders and you have another great Doig story in Montana.
