I really enjoyed this book; it makes me want to read more about the people of Hawaii and of Moloka'i, as I didn't know about Moloka'i at all until I read this book. It also seems like this book would make a good epic movie...has anyone heard anything about a movie?

Have just reread this due to seeing the movie a few days ago. I remembered the movie being significantly different from the novel, even though Chandler wrote both, and I wanted to see how. Anyway, the multiple double-crosses in the book make much more sense than in the film, but the final whodunnit in the movie makes a bit more sense the final whodunnit in the book. I mean, talk about an absence of foreshadowing there. But then, it was Chandler's first novel and standards for detective fiction have never been all that stringent. Anyway, still a satisfying read. I still love Philip Marlowe, and I'm happy to have spent the time rereading the novel for the first time in years. I suspect everyone knows this, but just in case: the 'glbt interest' is of the (multiply) negative variety, as was usual in movies and lit of the 1930s-1950s.

idkkk its a story me nd corrinn always read at random times
"Each has to enter the nest made by the other imperfect bird." The Rumi quote that inspired the title for this book serves as a good preview for how deep Anne Lamott's literary bonafides run. And the writing in this book is absolutely exquisite. But the story itself, to me, just didn't measure up. In a book where two out of three main characters are addicts, obviously there is going to be a great deal of subterfuge and deception in daily life. But it is precisely the mother's past battles with addiction that make me so dubious about her missing the multiple warning signs of her daughter heading down the same path. She certainly worries enough - a large portion of the novel is a chronicle of that every-parent's-worst-nightmare inner monologue - but her parenting itself seems so lenient for the first half of the book, and then so draconian at the end, that there seems to be very little transition between the two extremes. Also, the characters don't seem to do very much from page to page. Maybe because James is the only one with a real job, or maybe because the pacing is generally slow, or maybe because not much happens in the day to day life of the world - but either way, I found myself wanting a bit less talk and a bit more action.

this book is miserable. unless you are interested in the birth of the novel and 18th century literature. if not, i suggest moving on. even if you are, its not that sweet.
