I've read this one before and it was great to read it again. I love magical creatures and it is interesting to get to see how folk tales can make their way in literature.

De Selincourt's translation is over forty years old now, but still remains my preferred version of Arrian; his rendering provides a lot of the elasticity and fluency which Arrian's original didn't have because of his choice of prose style. It's a nice compromise which adds to the accessibility of the work. What didn't, and what is nearly always my quibble with Penguin editions of the Classics, is the complete dearth of any useful maps. I was surprised that the one in this even managed to show Issus, it was that basic.

Damn. This book will seriously make you hungry. I was hungry for food I'd never even heard of before I started this book. This was an extremely pleasant read. I imagine it would've been far more pleasant if I'd forgone the audio book and read the thing, so I didn't have to hear her grating accent. No one should ever pronounce it Loes Angeles. EVER. And she just. kept. saying it. You're in New York. Not Loes Angeles. STOP IT. I agree with some of the other reviewers, the personal bits weren't as much fun. I've never read the NYT, so I had no idea who Ruth Reichl was before I picked this up. I would've been interested to read her reviews if I'd had the chance at the time. A few bumps in the road, but otherwise, a very nice, quick read.

The Kite Runner written by Khaled Hosseini is a fictional novel that entails; horror, friendship, love, jealousy and even death. This literature novel is about and Afghani man who attempts to make an effort on making his life work; even though he has a deep dark secret. The author tends to focus on the relationship that the Afghani man has as a child and how it develops into his mad hood. The scheme unveils characters that all affect this man; such as his father, his servant and even himself. Amir, the narrator describes his way of living in Kabul, Afghanistan as a child. He encounters ethnic disputes, political issues, friendship problems but most of all an internal conflict. Amir has a personal servant named Hassan, now Hassan see’s them more than just friends. Yet Amir has to protect his image and sees a tragic event take place. Now Amir has been brought into this world without a mother around. His father is a businessman that is also well known through the city. He tends to put pressure on Amir through the story; trying to teach him some life lessons that as a man Amir should know. Hassan and his father are servants to Baba and Amir, Hassan serves breakfast to Amir and does everything for him. Hassan even fights his battles. Amir and Hassan is based on lies; lies that are uncovered later in the story. Tell then Amir and Hassan have fun being friends and live to kite run. (Which is the only symbolis that keeps their relationship last even when it’s over) Amir and Hassan have a brotherly bond; but all good things come to an end; right? Since the Russian started to invaded Afghanistan, Baba and Amir had to flee the country, leaving the thread of the kite to run its course until the truth was able to be set free. They flee the country to the United States; a land of the free. Well at least Baba didn’t think that way; he was still reminiscing about his life back at home. Yet Amir started to get comfortable and started to live the American life and published his own book. Even though the bong with his father was never as “great” as Amir wanted it to be, Baba was always proud of his accomplishments. Baba had gotten to see the man that Amir turned out to be and even see his son fall in love. Hosseni gives the reader a sense of realization, as if you were really living the life of an Afghani. He gives you issues from the 1970’s until the 2000 and how one can conquer these issues with the help of your own community. That’s what Amir did when his father died; he received helped from his wife and his own country when he went back to revisit his past. Hosseni gives the us readers issues that we can relate to; trying to find oneself, problems at home, over all issues that we as citizens encounter every day. When Amir finally faces his pass; the truth was set free. But in order for Amir to truly be happy and comfortable with himself; he had to finally fight his own battle and not get someone to fight it for him. He faces the bully of his past and not only sets his the truths free to others but comes to the realization that no one is perfect I recommend this book to everyone. This book has inspired me to actually be a better person and see that people in different countries struggle just like we do. This book has taught me life lessons and that there is always a way out even if it hurts you in the near future. Hosseni has given us readers the opportunity to look at things from the outside in. Whether it is our friendship, relationship with parents or even finding yourself; this book displays all these feelings into one book called the Kite Runner.

Excellent mad scientist comic from an artist and storyteller I have admired since we were in college. The Sunday strips are special treats, and there is plenty of humor to go around in the main storyline. The comic recently ended its run online, but continues with new author commentary. I *adore* commentary tracks on DVDs, and apparently comics are no exception. Also, Shaenon once let me sit in her dorm room and read all her Sandman comics, thus introducing me to the magical world of graphic storytelling. Thanks, Shaenon!
