This book was one of my favorites when I was in about the 4th grade. Now, I would give it 3* I think, as I still found it funny and "punny", which I love, but it was rather short on plot. It is about a boy named Milo who is always bored. One day he finds a mysterious gift in his room, a phantom tollbooth which takes he to a strange land ruled by two kings. King Azaz rules over the land of letters and words, while the Mathemagician rules over the land of numbers. Milo and his two friends whom he meets in this strange place, Tok the Watchdog (who has a clock for a body) and the Humbug. The two things I kept thinking during my read were "I wonder how many of the puns and funny plays on words today's kids would even undertand?" (Pretty cynical?) and that I was disappointed in the plot. Milo and his friends seemed to hop from situation to situation doing lots of things but not with any sense of building to a climax in the way that Harry Potter of Percy Jackson books do. It was more like just getting all the good ideas the author had down on paper. I felt the same when recently while watching the "blockbuster" Clash of the Titans, lots of action, but with no real point.
