Who says the short story is dead? The quality of the individual stories tends to skew very high, and in evaluating the anthology as a whole, it is a good value as a means to introduce one's self to both established and emerging writers within the Asian American community and to observe the different narrative strategies that might be employed to convey both personal and community experiences. One shouldn't walk away thinking this is THE definitive anthology of Contemporary Asian American Fiction, but an affirmation that there should be many more such anthologies in the world, and that the reading public will be well-rewarded for it.

This is the second book of a lesser-known series by the author of Anne of Green Gables. The Anne books are more popular, but the Emily books are deeper and darker, and some of my favorite young adult literature. Like Anne, Emily is an orphan, and goes to live with conservative relations. The three books chart her coming of age, her college years and her professional endeavors, and are excellently written. Emily is a character of ups and downs -- people who dismiss L.M. Montgomery as a flowery girl's writer have never read the Emily books (or are idiots). When she finally achieves hard-won and often bittersweet success (in life, in work, in love), you are soaring with her. Montgomery's work is constantly under-estimated, and the way the books are marketed doesn't help (the flowery script, the swoony illustrations). There are many layers at work in her stories, and some pioneering feminist concepts tucked in between the deep appreciation of nature, the commentary on the stuffy contemporary society of her day, and the delightful, well-drawn characters.

I'm impressed by how well the author was able to write from the viewpoint of an autistic boy, especially as he deals with something so emotional for his parents. I think it will help me understand a few things about the way my autistic brother-in-law thinks. I would recommend this book, but there is a lot of swearing and the subject matter is certainly not uplifting. Definitely interesting, though.
