Though I own so many books that I could most likely build a couch out of them, there are only a select few that I truly love and this is one of them. Life of Pi is a wonderfully written, researched and developed story. It is for the everyman but asks questions of its readers that are not easy to answer- questions about faith in general and in god. It is definitely one of my favorites.

I couldn't wait to read this book. I loved her earlier book, The Last Life, so when I saw all the amazing reviews it was getting I got it right away. I liked it, but honestly, I didn't love it. It was engaging and a good vacation read, but the characters drove me a bit crazy (as they are supposed to) and I wondered a little bit about the point in the end. It's definitely a commentary on the life of 30-somethings, so that part is fun (and sort of depressing).

I read this book in high school and I don't remember having any strong feelings about it, but re-reading this time I think I enjoyed it a lot more. I can really understand now why it is seen as such an important book in African-American and feminist literature. By the end of the book I was crying like a baby, but I was happy to know that at least Janie had gotten to experience love as it was meant to be, if only for a short time. Janie was a true rebel against what was expected and accepted from black women at that time. She lived for herself and what made her happy, which certainly wasn't money or material possessions.

The first 200 pages drag a bit, but the last 600 (yeah- it's long) are amazing. I've been looking for a book like this since I finished it, and I haven't found one yet. The "Harry Potter for adults" tag is appropriate in that regard.

At times, it felt as if Heir to the Shadows wandered aimlessly. It was also difficult acquiring a sense of time. Years could pass without notation. I had to rely on the author noting Jaenelle's age or some other reference to time written within the chapter. Anyway, it wasn't until the end that the story became focused.
