This is a book written by a good friend of ours. We read it out loud to our kids and it kept all of them (except the 3 year old) engrossed. It's short enough that reading it doesn't become and chore and you don't forget how it all began before you finish.

Oops she did it again, after reading the first Harry Potter. I was really compelled to read the next one, only because I hate leaving things unfinished. Well this book wasn't as good as the first one for three reasons, it wasn't long enough, there was less detail about main plot, and the protagonist, and the sequence between the serpent, and Harry could of been better described. From this book I really think that it was just a confirmation of the first book, because about this time I was really getting into reading, and I loved how these books in particular took me away with my imagination, a little childish I know but I'm a teenager now, and I still read these kind of books.

Nice, easy read. I have enjoyed the progression of characters and story line in these books. The plots can be predictable but that's alright. Still good stories. As with her other books in this series, this one is mostly G-rated, with a PG moment or two. Soap operas and music videos are way worse.

Harkness does a good job of laying the groundwork for an interesting series involving creatures: witches, vampires, and daemons. The daemons are relatively unexplored in this story which does leave a bit of an empty feeling in that corner of the story. The middle of the book stays too long in the twilight-ish- "o, I'm a witch in love with a vampire/ forbidden love" scenario. it does set up the second half of the book nicely and the need for three of each type of creature to come together to solve the mystery of the mysterious book, Ashmole 782. I'm interested enough to look forward to the sequel.

This debut novel has all the ingredients which usually make a book irresistible for me – take one children’s librarian, add one ten year old boy who loves the books his God fearing parents hate, stir in a road trip and sprinkle with references to classic children’s literature and voila….well, unfortunately the result was more of a sunken souffle for me. The story opens well with our narrator, Lucy Hull, a young children’s librarian in Hannibal, Missouri, taking an interest in the well-being of her most regular customer, 10 year old Ian Drake. In the course of guiding this avid reader towards the best of children’s literature, Lucy discovers that Ian’s very religious mother has enrolled him in anti-gay classes run by Pastor Bob. Her hand is forced when she discovers Ian camping out in the library and they find themselves on the run in an eventful road trip from Missouri to Vermont. There is some confusion as to who has “abducted” who. Ian is the arch-manipulator, playing Lucy in the way a child can, turning on the tears, changing the subject but Lucy is so easily “played” she lost all credibility for me. There are lots of weird and wonderful characters including Lucy’s Russian immigrant father with his shady past and plenty of amusing incidents from ferrets to the sinister figure who stalks Lucy and Ian. Although it has glimmers of brilliance, The Borrower, left me unsatisfied and slightly disappointed. I felt left behind and didn’t feel any real connection with any of the characters. It seems to be a marmite book though and will provide plenty of discussion for book groups.

Just thought I'd add my vote to those of all the people rating this better than The Catcher in the Rye
