I learned quite a bit about the history of the modern obituary, where the best obits can be found, and the different styles that the come in. I also learned that some people have too much time on their hands.

Ryman threads the life stories of Judy Gumm (Judy Garland before her name was changed), Frank Baum (the author of the Wizard of Oz, and a fictional modern day actor daying of AIDS until the three plots final weave together. Ryman has a brilliant, fluid imagination. This book still moves me today. I saw a stage adaptation of this book at Victory Gardens in Chicago and was almost as impressed by how the theatre company brought these different worlds of each character so seamlessly together.

Just after i started this book, several people told me how bad it was. But because I was already on page 50 something, I pressed on. Well, I didn't really get in to the book until page 300. I can't say that the book was all that great, but the author did a great job of getting your emotions sucked in to the story. I didn't like the character development of David or Norah. David was a mystery to Norah throughout the story and was never resolved. For some reason, I was really consumed with the storyline..

Amazing book that not only touches on money and success mindset but also subtly but profoundly changes some of the core conditioning and beliefs that govern our lives in general.

After reading only literary fiction, it is nice to get some contrast with something more mainstream like this book. I would go into the numerous faults in this novel, which cares more about the meals its characters eat than their psychology, but that would be like picking apart the mise-en-scène in the Jackass films: this is a book that's never meant to be read in such a harsh light. I also have a hard time deciding whether it's heartening or depressing that such trash is so successful in our current book market. My summation: the book's terrible, its jacket (by Chip Kidd) displays more wit than its contents.

It wasn't a bad book and i liked all the characters in it however, it seemed to me that not a lot really happened in it which was similar to the last book. I understand that a lot of what is happening is set up for the final book but that didn't stop me getting bored with some things and just wishing things would hurry up. It also seemed to me that some things which appeared to be being set up nicely in the last book just came to an abrupt end in this one. I liked it, but i'm not dying for the next one although i will read it.

Good but very very very dark movie. No light at the end of the tunnel.

How could you not like this book, if only for the story of Foucault dropping acid with two UCLA graduate students while at Zabriskie Point.
