The buyers at work were buzzing about this one when it came out, picked it for a featured title, so I grabbed advance copy when it arrived. It was good, but not great, so I'm not sure what the hype was all about. Granted, I got totally sucked in by the main character, who tells us right off that she's crazy and has sketchy memories due to electroshock therapy. And the end did surprise me. Maybe if I hadn't had such high expectations, I would have liked it better instead of wondering what the buyers saw in it that I didn't.

Follow up to Eye of the Red Tsar, this book does a decent job of standing independently, filling in historical details through flashbacks. Multiple mini stories did lend an air of predictability, but mostly this book can be viewed as a well-written bridge to a (hopefully) thrilling conclusion. FINAL DETAIL by Harlan Coben was the best book I have read in a long time. It was hard for me to go to bed last night while I was reading and the first thing I did this morning was finish it. This is an easy book to read as there is a lot of dialogue. The conversations between Win and Myron are priceless in my book. There are references made to old TV shows and movies and I especially like the Batman analogy. This books is 384 pages long and it is 384 pages of pure fun. There are some scenes that are pretty intense, but are tastefully done. Esperanza is arrested for murdering one of their clients and Myron and Win set out to find out what really happened. You are taken to some pretty interesting places in this book. Win is of course his good looking self and so funny in his dry way. The end of the book had me in tears because of the sentimental factor. Myron and his parents conversations are the best in my opinion. I think the next book could be interesting if the parents do move to Florida part time. Possibly Myron will open an office in Florida too. We will have to wait and see. This was one of the books that I had purchased for my Kindle and I finally got around to reading it. I am not sure what took me so long as I have always liked Win and Myron. I have added the next in the series to my reading list. Yes, I know it is sad, but I have a reading list so I don't forget what I want to read next. I read to page 150, and that's all I could take. Too much infidelity, sex, drugs, AIDS, suicides and self-destruction, and I couldn't see that anybody learned anything about their unhappiness and disillusionment. Maybe, however, it I had finished the book, I would have seen some redemption, but it wasn't worth the torture. This is beyond "The Lost Generation" [Gertrude Stein] of World War I; it's "The Goon Generation."

Would liked to have given this book 3 stars, but due to the all the "nasty" sex that seemed to continue creeping into every aspect of the book, it is a small 2 star read for me. A bit disappointing.

Rather than making a clear and decisive central argument (as he's done in his previous books), Dawkins tackles all of the arguments and complaints against atheism with skill, humor, confidence. As an act of consiousness raising, The God Delusion is very effective. It may not make any converts, but this book is sure to give any secularist better arguments and bigger cojones. Highly recommended.

3.5 stars. This is a well-researched and engaging story about the intersecting lives of two men in Detroit 1967. Thomas is a white cop. Robert is a black Marine, serving in Vietnam as the story opens. He is wounded and returns home to Detroit to find a city full of tension and a younger brother full of anger against the white establishment. Over a year filled with tension and violence, assassination and riots, these two men deal with family conflicts and then come up against each other over the shooting death of Robert's brother. This book had the potential to be emotionally gripping, but somehow just missed. It is well written but the style is just a little detached, so I found myself interested in these two men but not emotionally engaged in their lives. The ending is hopeful and the story is worth the read. Some may love the fact that it never descends into melodrama. I would have liked a little more emotional tone.

I enjoyed the read- and hated it- all in the same breath. I admire his courage to leave and enjoy nature, but was very disappointed with his ignorance to what life really is about. He really believes in what he did, and that was even admirable, but still lacking in logic. Know what you believe. Understand it/Study it. Live it. Stand up for it. He missed a couple steps.
