A book that tells a very interesting story of a remarkable man. Fitzroy MacLean was a British Foreign Service worker in the Soviet Union in the 1930s, and his book offers a very detailed and well-written account of a bizarre and scary place. He refused to allow the tight control that outsiders were subject to stop him from exploring Southern Russia and Central Asia, places where life had barely changed since the Late Middle Ages. After he left the U.S.S.R., he volunteered for the British Army and was sent to North Africa. He became a part of the S.A.S. and went on missions all over North Africa, Iraq and Iran. He subsequently became head of the Allied Mission to Yugoslavia and a friend of Tito. It is a remarkable adventure story and not at all in the same vein as the idiotic History Channel style World War II books that have swamped America in the last few years. If you want an intelligent, keenly observed, insider's account of a massively important era in modern history, and a thrilling story, read this book.

While I read this book quickly, I really struggled with enjoying it. The characterization wasn't nearly as well-executed as The Kite Runner. All the characters were very stereotypical and one-dimensional to the point of being unsympathetic, even the stereotypically sympathetic ones. The plot, however, was very compelling. The story was told against the backdrop of a swath of Afghan history, and Hosseini did a good job of using his story to reflect the general feelings of different factions at each part of the timeline. The history of Afghanistan is, obviously, full of turmoil. The 30 year timeframe Hosseini studied here is just a very small, recent snippet of a long, long history of turmoil. Through his story, however, he tells this piece of history well. It is interesting and sad to see how the Afghanis kept (and keep) seeing the next up-coming faction as their savior only to once again have a government that is not truly concerned about the well-being of the people. The book also makes a very poignant statement on the fact that all wars take the lives of someone's loved ones, even a war concerned about the ultimate well-being of the people.

In the beginning, this book a lovely subtlety to it. I enjoyed that Ishiguro built up the tension slowly and quietly, and I was prepared to give this book four stars until the last few chapters. The ending left me feeling sick to my stomach, but beyond that, it felt completely inappropriate to the novel, as if one person had written the bulk of the book and another had slapped an ending on it. It was a disappointment after The Remains of the Day, and a pity after the care that Ishiguro had given to the rest of the novel.

I never got to experience this book as a kid, just the Disney animated & Hook film versions. I was not disappointed by the book at all. I liked it more than I thought I would. As expected Jim Dale did a fabulous job narrating. Can't wait to share this with my kids.
