An awesome read by a Pulitzer Prize winning author. Something everyone should read if you wish to have your eyes opened to the abuses of our tax system. This is an interesting read; not dry as you could imagine. The author studied tax systems all the way back to the time of the Pharaohs before he began working on this book and it shows. This book is very hard to put down.

Setelah selesai membaca buku ini, saya sadar bahwa buku ini membawa suatu emosi yang sangat personal bagi saya. sekitar 12 tahun yang lalu, ketika saya baru lulus SD, ayah saya pertama kali mengajak saya memancing ke tengah laut dengan perahu nelayan kecil di laut utara Pulau Jawa. Pada saat itu juga saya jatuh cinta pada laut, dan pada setiap keindahan yang bisa dibawanya.. dan sejak saat itu pula saya sering kembali ke laut untung memancing hingga sekarang ini. Mungkin karena hal itulah buku ini menjadi sangat personal bagi saya. Karena saya yakin tidak semua orang bisa memahami buku ini sepenuhnya, kecuali mereka pernah memancing di tengah laut. Why? simply karena dalam buku ini, ada begitu banyak istilah, teknik, situasi, dan juga budaya yang hanya diketahui oleh para pemancing.. Bagi para orang awam, mungkin mereka tidak tahu bahwa untuk menangkap ikan marlin, adalah impian tertinggi seorang pemancing... dan situasi cukup 'ekstrim' yang dihadirkan dlm buku ini, dimana seekor marlin bisa menarik sebuah kapal nelayan berhari-hari utk bertarung stamina itu bukanlah hal yang dibuat-buat dan sungguh bisa terjadi.. juga keadaan dimana seorang pemancing tidak bisa menarik ikan yg bgtu besar kapal hanya dengan sesederhana "ya sudah tarik saja, kok susah amat?" karena pada tingkat ketegangan tertentu benang pancing akan putus.. begitu juga fakta bahwa ketika ikan marlin melompat ke udara, maka insangnya akan dipenuhi air dan dia tidak akan bisa menyelam terlalu dalam utk beberapa waktu, dan masih banyak lagi~ Mungkin oleh karena itulah, saya yang memang sudah cukup berpengalaman memancing ikan di tengah laut dapat menjiwai buku ini secara lebih personal. NB : dan mungkin juga rate 5 bintang ini menjadi terlalu subjektif karenanya

Infuriating! I picked this up in an airport and left it accidentally in the toilet, with my boarding pass stuck into it. I was happy to be reunited with the boarding pass, but should have left the book in the toilet. Gladwell writes in his usual engaging prose about case studies of success in his newest pop sociology paperback. I grit my teeth, though: only one woman is featured in these case studies, and that woman is his mother!

Everyone has an all-time favorite, and this is mine. I re-read this book every year around my birthday as kind of a special treat to myself. Maugham's novels in general are always a good read, but this was the first of his that I read and it just kind of stuck with me. I love fiction from the early to mid 20th century, and Maugham captures all the idiosyncratic aspects of this just-out-of-reach reality that I find charming and curious. I like the way Maugham uses strings of adjectives to describe things and people almost in the round. Like three-dimensional writing. The characters are often hyperbolic, but not without being real people or individuals. The main character, Larry, falls outside most of the other characters' grasp; they just don't understand him, where he's coming from, or why he can't conform. I think most of us can relate to that in one way or another. If you've ever been branded a slacker, a Peter Pan or an outsider for choosing to follow a different path in life that severely arcs from the norm, you'll find a level of comfort and a sense of validation in this novel. Not a triumphant glorification, but just a quiet, understood nod of the head from a kindred spirit. When I finished reading it for the first time, almost twenty years ago, I sat down and wrote a thank you note to the person who had recommended it to me!
