Intriguing, but in general, Russian novels are better written by Russians.

This was an interesting book about leadership and the great Vince Lombardi. This book mainly talked about leadership qualities and tips to becoming a good leader. If you want to read a book about Vince Lombardi I would suggest finding his autobiography instead of this book.

A 13th Century French book (I read the translated version) that does some really interesting stuff with gender. A nice reminder that the Middle Ages weren't "primitive."

Was interesting, sometimes Zane's books can circle around one idea and rarely generate new ones.

gallagher disputes the theory that confederates lost the war because of a lack of will to fight and, in turn, praises that confederate spirit. i find after reading all of his citations, various letters to and from home and the battlefields, that the confederate soldiers didn't really know what they were fighting for, and every reason is jam-packed with empty rhetoric about "this great nation." gallagher follows this opnion when he calls into question the legitimacy of the confederacy AS A NATION, and he aptly notes that only by virtue of its military, could the confederate states have resembled anything. and look at how that turned out... yet the book doesn't fail to strike home with htis southern girl, and i cringe when i admit, that after reading all these words on the civil war in the past ouple years, something in me still roots for the confederacy and all its empty rhetoric.

This story is just so funny. Told from the wolf's perspective, I laughed for the entire time it took to read. I can't say that the wolf convinces me of his innocence, but he does a good job trying!

HoL is an experimental book which I think was done very well. Normally, I'm not a fan of books that use some form of trickery or gimmicks to keep the reader interested, but this was a gamble that truely paid off. The book slows in parts, and the fashion in which the book is set up does not lend itself to a quick read, but it is well worth the time it will take you to get through it.

I loved this series, and the final book is no exception. I’m sorry to see it come to an end. My first thought was that the series should continue, now that Tavi is the First Lord. Seemed to me like that was the beginning of a whole new series of adventures. But then I thought about it some more, and realized this series could be considered a coming of age tale, not just for Tavi, but for all of Alera. At the beginning of the series, Tavi is a young man hampered by his lack of furycraft, and he grows into not only his furies, but also into his role as cursor, captain, and finally First Lord. He’s truly come of age. Alera is in a similar position at the start, an old civilization but hampered by its feudal-like form of society and government, its use of slavery, and its hostility toward all other cultures different from its own. Tavi and other characters strive to make Alera realize that it too must come of age and outgrow these outdated notions if it wishes to not only prosper, but survive. The epilogue plants the seeds for that process to begin in earnest. Seen from that point of view, it makes perfect sense for Butcher to end the series with this volume – even though I’d still love to read more tales from the world of Alera.
