Enjoyable, quick read. I enjoyed the references to the Arizona landscape. Spinelli's writing style is descriptive, but not wordy. I liked that it was from the perspective of a teenage boy looking back on this relationship, so the telling was matter-of-fact and wise through hindsight. I would recommend this to anyone who went to high school!

This is the dramatic story of an assassination attempt on Lorenzo and Giuliano De'Medici which was carried out in the great cathedral of Florence in April, 1478. The conspiracy to kill the two brothers, one of which died in the attack, united a rival Florentine banking family, the Pazzi, with the desire of Pope Sixtus IV to rid Florence of the Medici. The author, Martines, does an expert job of providing the reader with the social, economic, and political background of the plot. What's more, he succeeds in drawing living portraits of the key players in this horrific story of murder and retribution. Martines succeeds in informing us of what life and politics were like in a city state essentially ruled by a Mafia don, Lorenzo, Il Magnifico. Ostensibly a republic, Florence was dominated by rival families who constituted the various parties. Politics was governed by familial bonds of kinship and marriage. One's primary loyalty was to one's family. The state was used as a tool to advance one's own fortunes and punish one's enemies. Not unlike the dream of Tom Delay and Karl Rove. A wonderful read that sheds a clear light on the shadowy and dangerous politics of the quattrocento.

A follow up to Ender's game, from the perspective of Ender's 2nd in command, Bean. This is the worst of the shadow series (which is a shame, because its the first one, and it will turn off many readers). The rest of the series takes place on earth, describing a political chess match that changed the way I think of strategic interaction between countries (even though its fiction). However this book isn't like that, it's a retelling of the original story from a different point of view. Fans of Ender's Game will like it, but its not really on par with most of Orson Scott Card's writing.

This book has one of my favourite descriptions in it. I love his style of writing, although I didn't enjoy this book as much as 'Kafka on the Shore'.

Got about 1/3 of the way in and stopped. I think I was reading too much Vampire stuff at once - I also read the last book in the Twilight series around the same time - and I was over it for awhile. I will probably pick this up again and finish it, just not for a bit. I did like the writing. Started this one again on a cold and snowy day and I'm enjoying the beginning again….. Finally finished this! I thoroughly enjoyed it; I think I was too close to the Twilight thing to read any more about supernatural creatures when I first started it. But I'm thoroughly looking forward to the 2nd book in the trilogy, as it takes place in the past. I always liked the past of Anne Rice's vampire novels more than the present, so I suppose that's no surprise….

I really enjoyed this book. It is fairly short and so a quick read. It is interesting in that it is formulated from questions posed by a journalist and the written answers that Pope John Paul II sent back to him when there interview wasn't able to happen. I was recently having conversations about the Catholic Church's opinion of other religions and how much I liked how very open they were. This book quotes from the Nostra Aetate: "The Catholic Church rejects nothing that is true and holy in these religions. The Church has a high regard for their conduct and way of life, for those precepts and doctrines which, although differing on many points from that which the Church believes and propounds, often reflect a ray of that truth which enlightens all men." And later: "Instead of marveling at the fact that Providence allows such a great variety of religions, we should be mazed at the number of common elements found within them." Of course, the book is not limited to this topic, but addresses (among others): The Papacy, whether God exists, why God tolerates suffering, and then addresses separately Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam; as well as eternal life and the theme of John Paul II's papacy, "Be Not Afraid!"

An excellent review of historical biblical criticism. Ehrman does gloss over certain nuances in order to make a difficult subject "popular." I didn't find that there were a lot of "hidden contradictions" presented that I didn't already know about, but I think it may be a fair point that many people don't. There is also a kind of black and white thinking to some of the points he is trying to make. This may be a natural reaction against his original beliefs, since the author originally came from a fundamental/evangelical background, which tends to see the Bible as literally true and historical accurate--not to mention inerrant. If you are interested in knowing the historical reasons for some of the Bible's (really the New Testament's, since that is his primary focus) apparent contradictions, then this would be a great book for you.

What makes this book interesting and significant is its existential urgency--the man is dying! However, most of the book consists of cliches.
