Anderson's creepy setting and storytelling reminds me a little of Neil Gaiman. Two young friends are thrown into a life-threatening game that will resolve a feud between two inter-dimensional species. Funny, compelling, and a perfect read for young boys.

I really enjoyed it, and could definitely relate to eating habits alone that would be unthinkable with company...

My dad recommended this book to me. In the end, I think we both enjoyed it for similar reasons. In his words: I especially liked that the three sections are narrated by a different person; so as the story evolved the reader learns a bit more and the onion peel slowly comes off.

I was thinking this would be a hilarious book with funny anecdotes about life in general. But it really is just Tina Fey's autobiography, jokes included. It's was interesting to read about her career and rise to fame. It was fun to compare things that really came out of her life to things that she wrote into 30 Rock. Some of the book was annoying to me because we have different views on life, but overall, it was a pretty funny and fun to read.

If you've read Dave Eggers before, I can safely say this one is nothing like any of his other books. Not even close. Sometimes, when an author totally changes their tone or voice it annoys me, but in this case, not only did he pull it off, I don't think he had a choice. While the book is technically fiction, it's the story of Valentino, one of the infamous "Lost Boys" that were resettled in the US after suffering through years of war in the Sudan region of Africa. The book begins with Valentino being beaten, tied up, and robbed in his apartment in Atlanta. Besides this being a part of the story that fired me up just about as much as the parts that spoke of his experiences of trying to survive war in his homeland, it was also a brilliant way for Eggers to tell this story (and I heard an NPR interview with the "real" Valentino some months ago and the robbery & beating, while dramatized a bit for the book, actually did happen. Welcome to America, right?). Valentino tells his story of war, family, and survival as if he's speaking to those involved in his robbery experience. While he's falling in and out of consciousness after the initial break in, in his head he's telling the man what he remembers about his village before it was destroyed. What I like most about the book is the title. Valentino explains that there is a story that at the beginning of time God offerend his poeple the choice between cattle, which they already knew would keep them properous and secure, or "the What", and of course, no one knows what "the What" is because it's just that--the unknown. In the story "the What" is viewed as a dangerous choice, but that over the years his people have learned that sometime "the What" is the best thing that could happen. There's something exciting about that.

what is most clear almost immediately, is that between The Rainbow and Women in Love, D.H. Lawrence has changed immensely. There is a heavy, existential/philosophical darkness to him and he has lost his belief and love for humankind. Humans stand in opposition to God/nature, a true person must shed society and people altogether--this seems to be the main problem in the novel. The ones who struggle to rid themselves of the everydayness and tick-tock of society, these are the ones that Lawrence is interested in. It is hard to understand him in this darkness--i cannot follow most of the philosophy and intellectualism that occupies these characters, especially Birkin. Whereas the Rainbow was so natural, Women in Love seems to be hindered by the darkness. The darkness raises it from the heart/soul/unconscious to the head/logic/thinking. And this i cannot understand. something has broken in lawrence and i cannot follow him where he has gone. there are moments, though, when it all seems to make sense again, and his amazing acuity and intuition fall into place. these are the moments i loved.

I read this after Tanner did for a book report. Great character development and rich details. It was an amazing book for us to discuss.

Filled in a huge gap in my american history knowledge. Had no idea what happened after the pilgrims landed until the Revolutionary war.
