This novel is considered a classic of gay fiction - and well it should be. Elegantly written, the reader follows a handsome young gay man in 1980's London who is recruited by an octogenarian to write his biography from diaries he has kept since his youth. Through the diaries, the reader is privy to the typical life of a gay man from the 1920's through the early 80's. The lives of these two friends allow us to compare and contrast their struggles with being gay and the advances that have been made over the course of those six decades. Not quite as good as Hollinghurst's "The Line of Beauty" - yet still highly recommended. Grade: B+

I read this book in less than a day. According to the book store where I ordered it from, I was even one of the first to collect it. Explains a lot really? But before you panic, there will be no spoilers here. All I can say about this book is that it did not, in the slightest, disappoint me. I sat in shock, horror, disgust, happiness - everything. Valkyrie is still at her best and Skulduggery is still at his wittiest. If you haven't read any of this series - do so now. And if you have but haven't read this one - do so now/hurry up. Derek Landy, you have done it again. Now if you excuse me, I'm going to bask in this books holiness.

Dee Dee IS punk rock. Reading this book is punk rock. It also a beautiful meditation on what is truly screwed up in this world, and how to find solace amongst in the worst in life. After I started getting into this book, around the time Dee Dee spoke of recording the song, "Listen to My Heart," I felt a shudder. I promptly listened to the song, and kept a Ramones loop going while reading the rest of the book. I finished the book, and the loop remains.

Three stars looks like a bad review, but it really isn't. I couldn't give it four stars because it was so hard to get into. The writing style was the main thing that tripped me up. I'll paraphrase. 'Cornwallis rode along the Delaware, thought, this war is never going to end if Howe keeps letting those pesky rebels escape.' I had to read all such sentences four times for the first 200 pages or so. Using commas to combine two unrelated sentences was just crazy to me and I always wanted to read the 'thought' as 'though'. It made no sense. The book took off once I got used to that, though. The highlight is how much Daniel Morgan there is in the book. I love me some Daniel Morgan. Mel Gibson only wishes he were as cool as Morgan.
