I was able to read this book because of a class I took during the second semester of 2011. We based our discussion and group reports on this book. Well, most of it. But even though we had this book, the professor I got was phenomenal. He's an extremely good speaker. I loved listening to him - every word that poured out of his mouth was sensible. I may not agree to some of what he said but somehow it influenced the way I looked at things. This person was a former student of Randolf David. And, I envy him for that. Recently, I attended a symposium wherein Mr. David was the speaker. He related the life he had and the different events that made him write this book. The only way to truly understand this book is to read it. No review of mine is going to justify it.

I read this book at the time in my life when I was at my lowest. I was in desperate need of something to restore my hope in not only love, but in myself, and I found both in this book. Any girl who's ever lost her love and her faith can relate to Liz's life. And the story is told with just the right mixture of bitterness, sarcasm, irony, hope, and nostalgia that it leaves you with a satisfied "Ahhhh" feeling at the end. Perfect. A must-read. Women only.

I have to admit that I found this even more frustrating than Mansfield Park, and a lot less enjoyable. This was Austen's last novel and probably written for the money. It has all the Austen formula, a nice plucky herione,a brooding lord who is more than he appears, scheming relatives, a revelation which changes the whole story, and of course endless social parties. What this doesn't really possess and needs is Austen's wit. Lady Russell and Anne's father practically beg to made fun of. Especially considering how Anne's father is chasing after another daughter's best friend. And speaking of which, what is Elizabeth's story? She seems totally asexual. One wonders if she isn't a early percurser to Jos Smedly in Vanity Fair, an obviously gay character in a world where no one could talk about it. At any rate, I was disappointed. Mostly by the endless telling rather than showing of what is going on. Dialoge please!

I enjoyed this book (memoir) but felt that the flow if it could have been a bit better. I would recommend it though!
