this book deserves a 5/rating... but I can't do that. perhaps it is me but it took me three attempts with the actual book until I finally gave in and bought the audio book. and even then it took me two tries got get past the beginning. it was my first attempt at Sanderson and I didn't know what to expect aside from a rave from my buddy. each time the main character would get to Elantris... I would shut it down. it was so dreary...such a downer. Then I would read another of Brandon's books, realize or be reminded of his genius in creating worlds and magic systems. so,/thus reminded I would restart Elantris and... get a few extra pages further... only to fail again. I have since read Mistborn Warbreaker Rithmatist Steel heart Fire Fight and the way of Kings and in between each (it seemed)/I would return to Elantris for another try. Finally I have finished it and once again glad I persevered. I have come to love Raodin and Serene. So what was my problem? Normally, we see the magic and the wonder right from the start... and it is the conflict that our heroes face that sets the stage. in Elantris... the lack of magic and the mystery of what happens to Raodin is the story and we have got to slog through the proverbial elantrian muck to realize and feel for what is accomplished by the end of the novel. So. why Four stars? Even though I believe we needed this journey I think we could have a tad bit more foreshadowing early on. Perhaps get to know the main character more before he changes. the first chapters are so bleak...and really without hope ...ultimately this was its flaw. please don't let it deter you. it us a wonderful story... hang in there long enough and you will be rewarded.

This book was quite good (in the informative, fact-filled sense), but I think I wanted more from each of the profiles. Of course, it's not really fair to say that because the book does exactly what it says it's going to provide: a madcap story of sex, style, celebrity, and modern femininity. It delivers there, hitting all the high points of a brand of girl (because few flappers were women, really) who inhabited and represented a specific moment in time, and was ultimately snuffed out by economics (see also 1929, the year banks broke)--and in Europe, war.

I was surprised that I liked this book as much as I did. I actually started it months ago and put it down after finishing Book One: Italy. I was dreading reading about her pursuit of devotion, but after finally picking it up again I realized it was very enjoyable! It makes me want to go to India to find my own guru. I think I might actually try yoga class again...

Simply one of the greatest books ever written. Retrospectively, some of the plot twists should be hokey, but Irving's characters are so real and sensitive that he winds up just nailing it. People with English degrees will be unsettled by the mirror the narrator holds up.

I love reading like this. Proust makes everything fascinating. Funny story though, the book is 500 and some odd pages long and I got to page five hundred and something, then left the book in the back of a taxi cab in my rush to catch a train, highlighted, underlined and the whole nine. I don't know if I have the emotional energy to read the whole thing again, and I feel like I'd be cheating if I got a new copy and just read the last bit.
What a fun perspective!

Not as good as "The Designated Mourner" though it won some sort of prize. Check it out.

This is my favorite E. J. Dickey book of all time.

Isuzu "Rin" Sohma graces the cover of this volume! Rin isn't always a likeable character, but if you read this volume and previous ones, you'll understand why.
