as a medicine nerd, i love that this is based on a nerdy disease - 5-alpha reductase deficiency. but don't let that scare you away, it's actually an absurdly good book on top of and in spite of this.

I really love the format of this book - perfect for my attention span and what I'm looking for in this type of book - a strategic analysis of specific campaigns, but written in a way that isn't pretentious. I especially liked the essay on how 15 Scottish anarchists toppled the Thatcher government through their anti-Poll Tax campaign. I liked the quote from one of the organizers about about how he spent half his time fighting off the ISO and the other half fighting off the Right.

I like Coetzee's shorter pieces better. At first I found Elizabeth Costello an intriguing character; then I just thought she was annoying. At first I liked the titular 'Slow Man' narrator, and then I just found him whiny. It's amazing how much I grew to detest all of the characters by the end of the novel. (Professor B, Poco lit; 300 pages)
