** spoiler alert ** This book is making the rounds among the staff at the school where I work. I just finished it yesterday. I'm was intrigued by Ginger Mauney's descriptions of her work in Africa filming baboons and elephants. I will be checking the public library for a video of hers.

i've hit this one twice... that's what it takes. first time thru is annoying, then amusing once you get used to the quirk of the satire. second time thru it's a poignant war story with desperately sad characters.

I learned from this book that there is always room for interpretation in the scriptures, especially when privy to some of the rough drafts! Biff is an unlikely hero as the side-kick of "Josh", aka Jesus, during his childhood and adolescent years omitted by the Bible. (After reading it, you'll know why they left things out!) In addition to learning a lot of Christ's culture and the time in which he lived, it's friggin' hilarious. Most impressive is Moore's ability to poke fun at the conventional ideas of Christianity, while still allowing Josh to remain without fault and yet completely human: just let the always irreverent Biff do the sinning instead.

Before she went crazy, Robin McKinley wrote some of the most awesome young adult fantasy out there. Her heroines were smart and plucky, with a bit of tasty pathos to keep things interesting. Aerin, the main character of HATC, is a dragon-slayer in training, while remaining decidedly introverted and bookish and not quite the most coordinated chick in town. She also has a love triangle (with SEX!)involving her second cousin and an immortal wizard dude. Needless to say, she was quite the hero for me in grammar school. I still hold out hope that a film will be made of this book.
