******This review contains spoilers and images******** I adore this read so much that I want to run to the nearest book signing and have Lisa Kleypas autograph it herself. I have never felt so much love towards a book. The Devil in Winter is my absolute FAVORITE book!!! In Lisa’s previous novel, It Happened One Autumn, Sebastian St. Vincent “kidnaps” the heroine, Lillian Bowman, while trying to force her into eloping with him. At this point in the series Sebastian is portrayed as being a desperate villain; while Evangeline Jenner is read to be weak and passive. Her character is read to have a “crippling shyness, which results in a torturing stammer.” But don't they always say to watch out for the quiet ones? Haha!! When Evie approaches Sebastian with the proposition of marriage I was left feeling relieved. Thank god I will not have to read about another heroine being compromised and forced into marriage. ******* ”I’m offering to marry you. I want your protection. I need a husband. You need a rich wife. And we are both equally desperate.” ”You know what kind of man I am, Miss Jenner. Need I remind you that I tried to abduct and ravish one of your friends last week? Are you proposing a marriage of convenience, or are we to sleep together on occasion?” “I will sleep with you once to make the marriage legal. Never again after that.” “Lovely. I rarely like to bed a woman more than once. A crashing bore after the novelty is gone. It’s decided then. I accept your proposition.” ****** The race across England to Scotland is worldly entertaining while the pages turn themselves. There were a few moments of great fun in that carriage. Who can forget the infamous heated brick? Or the fact that Evie loses her stammer along the way. ***** "What happened to your stammer, Evie?" "I tend to stammer less with certain people. I suppose I must feel comfortable with you. " "No one's ever told me that I'm a comfortable sort. I'm sure I don't like it. I'll have to do something diabolical soon to correct your impression." ******* During the wedding the theme takes a turn to something more of a romantic nature; while delivering some of the best passages of humor. After consummating the marriage, Sebastian finds himself to be at the mercy of his own passions; however, Evie is determined to stick with their “arrangement” and refuses to continue having sex with him. ****** “I’m sorry, but I would prefer not to have intimate relations with you again. You told me you didn’t like to bed a woman more than once. You said it would be a crashing bore.” Sebastian was stunned and offended. Women never refused him. “We’re allowed to change our minds.” “I won’t however because of your romantic history. The sexual act means nothing to you, but it does mean something to me.” “I won’t apologize for my past. A man is supposed to have experience!” “From all indications, you’ve acquired enough for ten men. I have no objection if you choose to have paramours. You should go to one of them.” "Oh, I will. When we return to London, I'm going to embark on a spree of orgiastic debauchery that won't end until someone is arrested for it. But in the meanwhile...do you truly expect that the two of us are going to share a bed tonight-and tomorrow night-as chastely as a pair of nuns on holiday?” ******* The following chapters include many life altering changes for Sebastian and Evie. Evie’s father dies. Sebastian revamps the gaming club he inherited and surprise, surprise, he actually enjoys working! He fires a few club employees, and promotes a few as well. At this point the infamous Cam Rohan is introduced and plays an implement role in Sebastian and Evie relationship while causing some new found jealousy. **** ”If you ever kiss my wife again, no matter how platonic the fashion, I’ll make a eunuch of you.” “Are you so obsessed with her that you can’t fathom how anyone else could fail to feel the same?” “I’m not obsessed with her!” “Of course you are. Anyone could see it.” ******* Sebastian continues to try to resist Evie; however, he cannot. At this point, I am completely in love with him and have to continuing telling myself he is not real: ”Evie, I want you more than I’ve ever wanted anything on this earth. Tell me what I have to do to get you. I can’t hold to your agreement. I can’t live with you, see you every day, and not have you. I can’t….” “I object to the fact that you want me only because I’m unavailable, and therefore a novelty. If you would forswear intercourse with all women for six months…I would sleep with you afterwards.” “Sweetheart, what gives you the idea that you’re worth a half-year of celibacy. I’m Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent. I can’t be celibate. Everyone knows that.” “Then go find another woman.” “I want you. Only you. The devil knows why. I’ll take your bet, and I’m going to win it. And in three months, I’m going to take you to bed, and do things to you that are outlawed in the civilized world." ******** Of course Sebastian can do anything he wants! He is Lord St. Vincent!! God, the chapters that follow are amazing. I usually do not enjoy the second half of a book as much, but this book is amazing. One of the employees that Sebastian fired ends up trying to murder Evie in a fit of rage. Sebastian throws himself in front of his wife, takes a bullet, and almost dies of anemia and infection. Evie nurses him back to life and the two finally admit their love for one another: “Ah, Evie. I must have a heart, after all… because right now it aches like the Devil. I want to make love to you. I want to fill every part of you, breathe the air from your lungs and leave my handprints on your soul. I want to give you more pleasure than you can bear.” ******** (It is noted that I have read this novel twice) While reading this novel the second time, I found that the Scottish wedding band/ring is mentioned a number of times through this novel. It indicates the growing feelings between the couple and their acts of denial: ”Do ya have a ring for the lass? Tis’ fine workmanship, an all in Scottish gold.” “She doesn’t need-. All right. Choose something quickly.” Evie chose the simplest of all the rings, a polished gold band engraved with the words Tha Gad Agam Ort. “What does this mean?” she asked. “It says, ‘My love is upon ye’”. ****** “Evie told herself repeatedly that she didn’t care. He could sleep with a thousand and she would note care. As the gleam of her gold wedding ring caught her eye, the engraved Gaelic words seemed to mock her. “My love is upon you,” she whispered bitterly, and she tugged it off.” ********** “A long moment of silence passed. “Where is your ring?” Sebastian asked suddenly. Embarrassed to admit that she had removed it in a fit of pique, she mumbled, “I took it off.” “Give it to me.” All of sudden she discovered that she had become rather attached to the blasted thing. Reluctantly she withdrew the gold ring from her pocket, surreptitiously stroking the engraved surface with her fingertip one last time. Tha Gad Agam Ort… Taking the ring from her, he slid it onto his own hand. “I’ll take your bet,” he said grimly. “I’m going to win it. And in three months, I’m going to put this ring back on your finger, and take you to bed, and do things to you that are outlawed in the civilized world." ********* “Her palm rest over the weak throb of his heart and her fingertips discovered the Scottish-gold wedding band dangling from the end of a fine gold chain. Sebastian had not wanted her to find out that he wore the ring beneath his clothes. Agitated, he whispered, “Means nothing. Just wanted to keep it safe-.” ********** “Evie….I want to make love to you”. Reaching for his own throat, Sebastian fumbled beneath his shift and extracted the wedding band on the fine chain. Evie’s breathing hastened as he reached for her left hand and slid the gold band onto her fourth finger. Their hands matched together, palm to palm, wrist to wrist, just as they had been bound during their wedding ceremony. ****** “Don’t you dare send me away, you coward. Who else would love my freckles? Who else would care that my feet were cold? Who else would ravish me in the billiards room?” Slowly his resistance ebbed. He brought her hand to his face and nuzzled into her palm, his lips brushing the warm circlet of her gold wedding band. “My love is upon you,” He whispered…and she knew that she had won. ******** Another great find during my second read is the convoy between Lillian and Evie: “Westcliff thinks that St. Vincent is in love with you. He sees an odd sort of logic in why you would finally be the one to win St. Vincent’s heart. He says a girl like you would appeal to St. Vincent’s deepest, most secret fantasy.” “I should think his fantasy is to consort with as many women as possible.” “Dear, that is not St. Vincent’s fantasy, it’s his reality.” ***** When trying to envision Sebastian there was really one image I could hold: Jude Law. The perfect youtube video of Jude Law: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6OjJG... “I’m not a lady,” Evie countered. “I’m a gambler’s daughter and a scoundrel’s wife.”

Sarıkamış'tan Esarete / Tuğgeneral Ziya Yergök'ün Anıları (1915-1920) TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

Lark Rise to Candleford is actually three books, "Larkrise", "Over to Candleford", and "Candleford Green". Set in rural 1890's Oxfordshire, the author recounts her childhood, writing down all the little details and beauty of country life. Flora Thompson was a naturalist and her love of nature is self-evident in this trilogy. "Nearer at hand where the trees and bushes and wild-flower patches beside the path she had trodden daily. The pond where the yellow brandyball waterlilies grew, the little birch thicket where the long-tailed tits had congregated , the boathouse where she had sheltered from the thunderstorm and seen the rain plash like leaden bullets into the leaden water, and the hillock beyond from which she had seen the perfect rainbow. She was never to see any of these again, but she was to carry a mental picture of them, to be recalled at will, through the changing scenes of lifetime. "As she went on her way, gossamer threads, sun from bush to bush, barricaded her pathway, and as she broke through one after another of these fairy barricades she thought, ‘They’re trying to bind and keep me’. But the threads which were to bind her to hernative county were more enduring than gossamer. They were spun of love and kinship and cherished memories" (The BBC TV Adaptation of "Lark Rise to Candleford" converted this final paragraph from "Candleford Green" into a poem that Mrs. Timmins recites) I loved this and all the frequent descriptions of nature, the narrations of the simplicity of country life, and the stories of everyday people was so heartwarming. The final paragraph (quoted above) proved so moving that my eyes began to water. :-) I recommend this book to everyone!
