So, from past reviews, it may seem that I think Stephen King can do no wrong (the lit majors among you are probaby shuddering in horror, no pun intended). I love most of his books (cf. Cell) and actually think he is a very good writer - his character development is fab, and his stories are compelling, exciting, and usually have some actual symbolism (though some may be a bit too gruesome for the average bear). This is one of his best. If you decide to embark on this journey, make sure to pick up the unabridged version - I have read both, and it's best to absorb it all at once. This is an apocalyptic story of good and evil - survivors struggling to make it. Highly recommended.

Loved this. The Publicist's Tale was the only weak link.

Lordy, this has reaffirmed my dislike for the autobiography. Disjointed and clunky in places.

For a debut novel, Parkhurst has done well!! I couldn't get through this book fast enough and found myself turning page after page late into the night. Paul Iverson is a linguistics professor who finds his life in shambles after his 35 year old wife Lexy dies. Her body is found beneath their backyard apple tree. Did she fall or did she jump? The only witness to Lexy's death is their dog Lorelei. Paul, being a linguistics professor sets about to teach Lorelei to "talk" so he can understand how his wife died - was it suicide or an accident? In Paul's journey to find the truth he experiences extreme grief, loneliness and comes to learn things about Lexy he never realized before. I hope Carolyn Parkhurst writes more novels in the future. This is a novel I won't ever forget reading!!

Nicholas Sparks and his brother Micah took a whirlwind round the world trip together. The book was partly about their travels and partly about their family and lives. I had no idea that the Sparks' family had endured so much tragedy. From the dust jacket: "The day the brochure came was a typical one. With a wife and five small children, a hectic schedule, and a new book due to his publishers, Nicholas Sparks was busy with his usual routine. The colourful mailer, however, described something very different: a tour to some of the most exotic places on Earth. Slowly, an idea took hold in Nicholas's mind and heart. In January 2003, Nicholas Sparks and his brother, Micah, set off on a three-week trip around the globe. It was to mark a milestone in their lives, for at thirty-seven and thirty-eight respectively, they were now the only surviving members of their family. And as they voyaged to the lost city of Machu Picchu high in the Andes...to mysterious Easter Island...to Ayers Rock in the Australian outback...and across the vast Indian subcontinent, the intimate story of their lives would unfold. Against the backdrop of the wonders of the world and often overtaken by their feelings, daredevil Micah and the more serious, introspective Nicholas recalled their rambunctious childhood adventures and the tragedies that tested their faith. And in the process, they discovered startling truths about loss, love, and hope".

I'm on my third read of this book. It feeds my soul, slows me down and reminds me to arrange my life around the things that matter most....God, Greg, my family, health, friends, Chalet, slow living, slow food......thank you Pam and Wayne for this wonderful Christmas gift!

I enjoyed this book as a mild escape. The characters were pretty solid and well developed. The story itself was fun and easy to follow. Don't expect a lot of intellectual stimulation, but enjoy the relaxing pace of the book.

Quick and painless, this graphic novel had kind of an artsy feel to it. There's no real plot, but it was still fun to read (but not usually laugh-out-loud funny) and it made some interesting points, though I can't remember what any of them were. Take that as you will.

An enjoyable overview of linguistics. Crystal's 73 chapters can be read consecutively, or - he claims - dipped into at random. Each chapter is a short introduction to one topic. For example, 'How vocabulary grows' or 'How to study dialects'. Since each is only five pages or so, you know not to expect too much - it's an orientation to the topic. Towards the end of the book (unless you randomly start there, of course), Crystal shows his great desire in writing: to encourage more interest in and concern for language. (That's definitely language as a whole, rather than languages individually.) For him, language and all aspects of its study are eminent in grasping human culture's richness. I think he's right to be such a proponenet of linguistic study, of respect for language.
