** spoiler alert ** I wanted to love this book, and perhaps that is why I am only giving it two stars: it was a disapointment. I love travel, and I love food, so this should have been the perfect recipe for me (despite the fact that Mr. Bourdain harbors vehement disdain for vegetarians). What ultimately annoyed me about this book was its organization. The author began by saying that he was looking for the perfect meal -- a combination of food, atmosphere, excitement, all that would culminate in a perfectly memorable experience. I was hooked. Then he opens the scene in Vietnam with Mr. Boudain trying to outdrink some venerable elders of the community. And during the story, we visit Japan, Portugal, Cambodia, Russia etc. But, for some reason, in between several of these chapters, we keep returning back to Vietnam. The reader is left to wonder if Mr. Bourdain visited Vietnam multiple times or if he is just a disorganized scatter-brain who failed to employ a good editor. In any event, the accounts of his adventures are fascinating --eating the still beating heart of a cobra, his near-death experience in eating pufferfish (though not as near-death as he had hoped), drinking himself silly in Russia and then diving into ice-cold lakes with other Russians, and witnessing several slaughters for the first time.

The story of Max, who after a fight with his mother gets sent to bed without dinner, is still a favorite of mine. We've all got a Wild Self, and Max lets his out to play with the Wild Things. He's so Wild he's the leader of the Wild Things. Most everyone can sympathise with Max when he suddenly wants to sail back across the sea, and his pleasure when he finds his mother left him supper and it is still warm.

The story of how a mountain climber fumbles his way into changing the lives of Afghan children and their families, one school at a time. Don't get me wrong, what Greg Mortenson is doing is great and really, nothing short of miraculous. But how he ends up in certain life-threatening situations and ultimately gets out of them will leave you shaking your head. And I should clarify, the 2 stars is for the story telling, not the story itself. The story is worthy of a full 5 stars.

** spoiler alert ** Hell hath no fury like a man who's had his mate kidnapped!!! And god help the moron stupid enough to mess with the mate of the most dangerous assassin the coalition has. I got to admit, I would have loved a little more blood, gore and piss poor fright from the said moron when he finally bites dust, you know just to satisfy the bloodlust in me. Oh well, maybe Shane rubbed off on me too.

Disappointing. I love Richard Preston's other books, but this one was boring and hard to read. I did not care about the people. It was difficult to keep track of who went with which story background. There were some interesting facts about Redwoods and tree climbing, but most of the biology and science was in the "blah, blah, blah" category. I wouldn't read this book if you don't have a strong science/biology background.
