Dystopian fiction is fiction that takes place in a future that is radically different from our own, one where people’s lives are worse than ours are today. Famous examples of this genre include 1984, Brave New World, and The Handmaid’s Tale. In Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, humans cannot procreate as easily as in the past, and a sexual revolution has occured, one in which women are treated as second-class citizens. The story is told from the point of view of a handmaid (whose name we never learn), a woman whose job it is to have sex with her male master in order to produce offspring. The book was published in 1985, and Atwood clearly took many of the facets of her future society from fundamentalist Christianity. But reading it today, I was struck by how many features reminded me of fundamentalist Islam: women as second class, not allowed to read and forced to wear clothing that covers them completely from head to toe. Overall, it was in interesting book. But it wasn’t one that I would go back and read again.

Love this series! I love how Gin doesn't back down from danger. I found this book hard to put down even though real life kept interrupting. Now I can't wait to pick up the next book! So, will Gin let Bria know who she is? Will Gin's and Owen's relationship hold? (I sure hope so). Will Owen begin making Gin's weapons? Further, I can't wait to see who Gin targets next. Although assassins work alone, I think Gin needs more allies. But her "family" is fantastic! This is a series that will keep you going. Pick it up if you haven't already!
