Killer Heat had such potential but it just never produced the nail-biting drama promised on the cover. The dialogue in the story was weak, choppy and confusing at times. And worse than bad dialogue, rather than writing complex characters the author relied on stereotypes and put-downs to elevate her heroine. The main character, of course, was startlingly beautiful while all of the other characters were tubby and round and waddled...so full of faults that the main character was perfect in comparison. There was no character development, aside from everyone else being fat and ugly. The only bright spot about this book was the historical aspects from the City of New York. It was difficult to finish.

Banyak substansi yang menarik dalam buku ini ; setting cerita yang eksotis, konflik yang nyata dan isu TKW yang sedang banyak dibahas belakangan ini. Tanpa bermaksud memihak (karena salah satu penulisnya adalah sahabat karib) menurut saya ceritanya mengalir dengan wajar. Dari sisi pembaca, cara bertuturnya cukup nyaman untuk dibaca, menyentuh dan menghibur. Sebagai orang yang "buta" dengan kehidupan di Timur Tengah, ternyata banyak hal yang cukup mengejutkan, terutama dari gaya hidup dan budaya yang berbeda dari anggapan orang banyak.

I wasn't sure whether to give this 4 or 5 stars, but I'm going to say 4.5. The imagination to be found here is incredible and awe-inspiring...this would be a great read-aloud for kids before bed. :) Haroun & his father's love of storytelling is infectious and flows off of every page.

I was really engaged in this book, even though I found the ending really disappointing. I guess that doesn't make it a bad book- just a bad ending. It is incredibly heart-wrenching, though...be prepared for that.
