A fantastic end to an amazing series! The story was full of surprising twists and turns but still maintained the concepts of love, friendship and bravery that Richelle Mead started with the first book. I like that the female characters are strong both mentally and physically and are positive role models for the readers. For me, this was one of the best books in the series that had tears in my eyes from sadness and also laughter. The story has created so many fantastic characters who I have enjoyed following. I have loved losing myself in this world and the journey Rose has taken.

" Goodnight Moon" is a wonderful story to use as a writing prompt for students. In my placement, we've read this book and then made our own "Goodnight ______" books. I've seen several students make " Goodnight Mom and Dad" which has always been a fun treat for parents to read. I would implement this activity in kindergarten or first grade, and would use it as a beginning level writing prompt. Overall, a sweet book to share with students before nap time or just because. :)

I love this book, ever since I was a kid. It's got everything people love about reading Tolkien without the length.

Glad to have read this one before the movie was made, as I think the writing skills here, honed to perfection by an LA street-journalist, are indeed noteworthy. (Can't see how the movie could match it, though trailers show it to be a tip-top production). The power of the narrative moves along like a commuter train, going, going, then stopping to pick up some other stranded soul, or stopping to look a little closer at what the main character (a homeless man) is really all about. And can we know? Perhaps not, because this character, so adeptly captured by Mr. Lopez, is as changeable as a wet hen, moving through various and unpredictable phases of music, mood and thought. What we get to see here, in the writing, is the real struggle to understand a fellow in distress, while all the while that understanding may be too far beyond our earthly sight to settle with.

Not so much for reading, but for listening, for it is a play for voices. And choose the 1963 recording, narrated by Richard Burton who said "the entire thing is about religion, the idea of death and sex".

I would categorize Kerrelyn Sparks' latest paranormal in her vampire series, "Secret Life of a Vampire" as one of the sweeter, yet still hot, in this whole series. Her hero is more Gamma than Alpha, her heroine is an ex-beauty queen turned cop, and there's not much blood spilled unless it comes from a glass. The vampires in this series are divided into two camps; Malcontents who want to rule the world and feed from humans at will, and the good vamps who feed off bottled blood and battle the Malcontents. Even though this same good vamps vs bad vamps has been done over and over, Sparks adds enough twists to distinguish her series from the rest. Her good vamps have their own 'Black Pages', their own Vamp Network cable TV station, and their own Vampire Fusion Cuisine. This story begins at a wild vamp bachelor party that gets raided by a pair of cops due to the noise of the bagpipes. Yes, I said bagpipes. The humor in this series isn't just in the dialogue. I mean kilt wearing, sword-bearing, sexy vampires in New York City? Be still my heart. Anyway, my enjoyment of this series is its refusal to bow to the popularity of the more serious and darker vein (couldn't resist) of stories that currently abound. Fun and funny, sweet yet with enough heat to satisfy most romance readers, I confess to being hooked.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Chabon is an amazing writer and storyteller. It usually takes me a bit longer to read his books than others, but it's not because they're difficult or slow, only because I like to relish the writing, as opposed to just skimming ahead to glean the plot. I really thought this one was particularly masterful - just a really clever story. I lost interest a bit toward the end, which probably isn't a great sign for a murder mystery (I think I got slightly confused by the plot for a little while), but overall it was still really good! He has the type of writing that makes me want to read his books aloud to someone else, just to relish and enjoy. Too bad we usually only do that w/children, and this book is about murder.

No stars. A novelette's worth of plot in 600+ pages, padded out with chapter after chapter of people sitting around talking about past events, delivering historical infodumps, stretching out conversations or analyzing events at tremendous length. There is: one battle (p. 500 or so), one spy mission, one assassination attempt against Good Guys and one against Villains, and that is it! The rest is filler--particularly for readers of previous Honorverse episodes, who won't need long introductions to most of the characters, societies or agendas. I just don't understand how this got published. MEMO TO SELF: NO MAS!
