Oh, what to say.... As a whole, I really enjoyed this series. However, it took a great deal of time for me to get through this book, mostly because it felt like I went from intrigue to frustration every other page. The story really picked up well the last 200 or so pages of the book, but I was disappointed with the ending. The final sacrifice in the Winterlands seemed silly to me and could have been prevented. It seems like Bray wanted the ending to appear bittersweet, but I felt otherwise. I was also upset with the way Pippa's character developed. I wasn't surprised to see the connection between her and Felicity, but I was annoyed that she turned out to be such a greedy soul for power of the magic. I was happy with the way things turned out for Gemma and her brother, and that he respected her wishes at the end (as well as her father). But, I was a little disappointed that nothing ever happened with her mother again. I realized that she crossed over, but I think that her character could have been a great addition to the third book, especially the end. The book could have been a lot shorter as well. There was a lot of unnecessary plot and interaction in the book, when there could have been more focus on Gemma and Kartik's relationship. I was happy with that storyline, for the most part...but at the end of the long journey with this book, I left it feeling both frustrated and a bit disappointed. And I hate to leave a series that way--especially one to which I have committed so much time to reading.

This is an interesting thriller with many twists and turns. Alice, whose parents are in the entertainment business has been out of work for about 7 months when she meets Drew who offers her a dream job in an art gallery. When Drew turns up murdered, Alice is accused of murdering him. There is also a young high school girl who has gone missing that is somehow involved in the mystery. The setting is New York, so many of the locations may be familiar.

I saw the movie and then read the book. It probably wasn't necessary to do both. It gave some more details and background to motives of the characters but it made me less enticed to read it because I knew what was going to happen.

What will life be like in the near future? Lauren Destefano’s take on life in "Wither" from “The Chemical Garden Trilogy”, includes death at a young age, kidnapping, pregnant teens (and not by choice, by force), a world of no freedom, and unimaginable terror, pain and suffering. Wither is the first book in a brand-new Trilogy. Rhine lived with her brother, Rowen, and their parents until they died from a new fatal illness which has been capturing the lives of all males at the age of 25, and all females at the age of 20. There are few “first-generation” people left in the world who are 70 and older, and they have either been ignoring the fact that everyone is dying off, or have secretly been trying to find a cure—as they already have for cancer—for this horrific illness. When Rhine is kidnapped along with 15 other girls and chosen to live because she has two beautiful eyes—one blue, one brown—as well has being a gorgeous, well-bred young lady of 16 years of age, she knows she is in for a never-ending night-mare of possible rape, pain and misery. Her servant Gabriel, her new husband, her sister-wives and the original wife of her new husband are all very kind to her, and like her very much. Her father-in-law is and does, not. Rhine becomes suspicious of (possible) horrible experiments that might be going on in the basement of the mansion she is now living in. She accidentally went down to the forbidden basement one day with her new lover and servant, Gabriel, and saw the first-wife’s body being rolled down the hall to be experimented with. The father-in-law must be trying to find out a cure for this awful illness. The other problem in this house-hold is that the garden is a maze, under lock and key, and is almost impossible to escape from. When her husband, Linden, decides that he likes her best, she becomes the new first-wife (the head wife), she receives a key, and along with the key, a new freedom. She finds her way through the maze one day during an awful storm, but gets hit on the forehead by a flying branch and gets caught. Because of the time to think while recovering in bed, she figures out a way to get out, but needs help in order to accomplish the mission. She convinces Gabriel to go with her, and he follows her. The question is, are they able to escape successfully?

"If you want this book you have to email the author to buy it. The title is self-explanatory. If you are worried about fending off armed mobs of anarchists who want to break in your house, kill, rape and take your food storage, then this book is for you."

Like all other Oprah's Book Club books, this one is very depressing. However, I love Joyce Carol Oates and her writing style brought this long, tragic story to life. I found myself really bothered by the turn of events after Marianne claims she was raped - she was suddenly rejected from her family after being the golden child. I guess that in those days it could have been likely that this would have happened, but either way it was on my mind throughout the rest of the book, especially after seeing hwo it affected the rest of her life.

perhaps she was relying on shock value to some extent, but it simply wasn't that shocking. maybe for someone who knows nothing about the world of sex work and domination it would be new and interesting, but i found it a little boring. i'm sure living it wasn't boring, but i wasn't engaged enough while reading.

I don't know too much about this time period (did I somehow miss this in school?), but from what I understand, this book is not entirely historically accurate. However, it's an enjoyable read - some drama and romance with a few beheadings thrown into the mix. I'm definitely curious to read more of Gregory's books.

As part of a LibraryThing Group read of all of Dostoevsky's novels, in chronological order, this is the second. There are pros and cons to this book in my opinion. I did not like that all women are depressive and overwhelmed by emotion. I thought the ending was quite abrupt, but that is probably due to the fact that this book was intended to be a character study and was never officially finished. I did, however, enjoy the story and the development of the title character, Netochka Nezvanova, which is "loosely translated as 'nameless nobody' ". She lives a bleak life epitomized by passionate love for her stepfather, her adoptive sister, Katya, and adoptive mother, Mikhaila, and passionate despair at the loss, pain, and betrayals in her life. Everything is left unfinished in this book, which leaves me wanting just a bit more of it all!
