I had a hard time with this thrid and final book of the series. It mostly felt like a slog, I didn't find the new characters and plot developments nearly as engaging as the first 2 books, which I really enjoyed. But at the same time I felt I couldn't give up so just kept at it.

Although this book was hard for me to get through it was worth it in the end. For me, this book was about the absurdity of life and how in the end we all end up dead anyway! Both grotesque and hilarious. Overall, I liked it.

The fact that David Sedaris admits that constant cigarette smoking cured his OCD should say something about the dark comedic nature of this book. Amazing writer -- everything he does is fabulous. Also, check out his holiday collection of short stories called Holidays on Ice.

** spoiler alert ** I liked this book, and I didn't like this book. I thought the premise and the action part of the story were lovely, though they detracted from the romance aspect, which is what I felt this book was slightly more focused on. That's also what I have some issues with. It was a bit Twilight reminiscent, because of the rather quick decision that Ellie is in love with Will, but it was better justified because she has been reincarnated. But I also felt like that part of the story took WAY too long to get going. I remember being around chapter 20 and nothing quite significant had happened in the romance department yet except she had decided she didn't like Landon. And this is a 35 chapter long book. AND THEN at the end where Will just does his COMPLETE 180 after hearing the archangel? Made me want to scream. In a "Are you really doing this to me author I JUST said it was reminiscent of Twilight and you do THIS?" way. So, if there is a sequel, I will probably read it, but this one didn't knock my socks off.

I loved this. It's a quirky, funny, sly twist on the English governess heroine. Ms. Penelope Lumley, recent graduate of the Swanborne Academy for Poor Bright Females, must meet the challenge of her first position: Taming, er, educating her 3 young charges who were apparently raised by wolves before Lord Ashton finds them wandering his estate. And decides he must keep them because, well, "finder's keeper's." There's plenty of mystery (of course), and this is mostly a long prequel for the rest of the story, but it is a delightfully well-told tale. I was not familiar with this author, but look forward to reading more of her books.

My kids and I love to read this myth-busting, useless knowledge, and curious trivia book.

This is one of those books where the author let facts get in the way of a good story. It's based on the true crime story of the murder of Charlie Wall in 1955. Wall was a local legend in Tampa and a retired gangster who was found in his home after suffering a brutal beating and getting his throat cut. This historical fiction takes us through the investigation and how it involved local gangsters, the Sicilian Mafia, newspapermen, crooked cops, movie stars, Cubans and Cuban exiles like an idealistic lawyer named Fidel Castro. Ace Atkins used a couple of composite characters involved with the Wall murder to describe a bygone era, and it’s very well researched. Unfortunately, the Wall murder was never officially solved and Atkins sticks close enough to real story that it comes across more as a chaotic look at a bunch of eccentric characters rather than a coherent storyline. I’m not sure why journalist Atkins didn’t just write a non-fiction account rather than going the historical fiction route if he didn’t want to break away from the real story. As a bonus on this, I listened to the audio version which included Atkins talking about how he got interested in and researched this story as well as a few recollections from some of the people who were actually involved.
