Classic Palahniuk. The story is fresh and creative in a why-didn't-I-think-of-that way, like all Palahniuk's novels, and just as heavy-handed. He has taken yet another incredible story told in an original way, (perhaps his most original yet, which is saying something) and weighed it down with unrealistic characters who are somehow simultaneously oversimplified and incomprehensible. The pace of the plot is infuriating, if never boring. Over half the novel is spent on background, and then just when you don't see it coming, the story is drowned in exhausting action. Despite it all, it's a highly enjoyable read, thanks to the creativity of the premise.

This book is so important to me on so many levels. For starters, this novel reminds me of my evolving taste in literature. My first encounter with Winterson was, as you may guess, not a good one. I couldn't quite get past the first few pages. I found her prose to be too "magical," too quirky, too much! I wrote off this novel as fanciful drivel. I picked up the book again, years later, thinking that I might give it another try. Of course, I soon fell in love with Winterson's novel. This book will remain a constant reminder that patience is a good thing, particularly when it comes to reading!

Gave it 3 stars for good character development & environmental descriptions, but it jumped between & around times & places a little too much for my tastes. May work lk as a movie, but was a little hard to follow reading. Maybe best read straight through without any breaks, as i do, the timeline line could be followed a little better...
