It was pretty good. Not nearly as gripping as the last two but still good.

This was not my favorite short story collection in SF, and I found many of the stories to not really be funny at all, leaving me wondering why they were included. It has a some great names writing in it (Robert Silverberg, Harry Turtledove, David Brin, Harr Harrison, Spider Robinson, Joe Haldeman, but the choice of stories fails the title entirely.

I asked my son what he thinks of this book. He replied, " It roars".

** spoiler alert ** I first read this 4 years ago and didn't get it at all. I thought it was flat, obscure and stupid. I thought it was for the literary elite because I couldn't for the life of me see the things that the people saw. But my interest in it was peaked again when I read his short story "Hills Like White Elephants." So I tried reading it again, and I was really moved. Who cares if it's the "typical Lost Generation" stuff? And what's wrong with it reading like a play? I almost think that it adds to the strength. I think for me, it's not about its style or its brilliance. It's about the people. What clinched it for me was Jake's self-assuring reaction to how he brought together Brett and Pedro Romero, and Montoya's reaction to it as well. "Everything is on such a clear financial basis in France. It is the simplest country to live in. No one makes things complicated by becoming your friend for any obscure reason."

An offshoot of the first two novels in this series, featuring the owner/Dom of the BDSM club in Dallas, TX and the man who was heavily involved in Jack Barnes & Sam Fleetwood's life (heros of the first two books. Julian Lodge is just about the most uptight Dom there is -- he has contracts with ALL his subs and will not go outside very carefully constructed boundaries in dealing with anyone, including Jack and Sam. Now he encounters Danielle who throws him completely for a loop--when he is vacationing at Jack's ranch, and then he meets up with Dani's long-time best friend, Finn. This is not an easy relationship journey nor is it an easy story to read. There's lots of discovery going on with these three people along with a former friend who is seeking to kill Julian and who puts Finn and Dani in mortal danger along with Jack's step-daughter. I like Sophie Oak's writing and have enjoyed her stories. Lots of loving and a remarkable process of change for many people in the group of characters.

Ever since I saw the movie "Amadeus," I've been wanting to read a good biography of Mozart. However, this isn't it. I had high hopes for this book, as it came with two CDs of Mozart's works that were referenced throughout the book. Unfortunately, I found the practice of going from work to work to be laborious, as the author would sometimes reference 3 works in a row, so I had to either listen to each one for only a minute or so before moving on or take 10 minutes out of my reading time to listen to each one in full. I usually chose the former. Fortunately, the works are referenced over and over throughout the book, so I did get to come back to most of them at least once. The organization of this book was kind of clunky. The author would write a chapter about Mozart's life, and then a chapter (called "Interludes") in which he would discuss some aspect of Mozart's work; for example, there is an interlude on Mozart's sonatas, and another on his chamber music, etc. I understand what the author was trying to do, but it didn't work for me. I guess I prefer things to be more linear. Also, I found it frustrating that the author would reference works that weren't included on the CD. I mean, I understand that he couldn't possibly include everything that he wanted to mention in the book on the CDs, but it was irritating because he would say something about a particular piece being one of Mozart's most important works and then of course it was nowhere to be found on the CD. As far as the actual content of the book, it was enjoyable. The author doesn't have a really engaging writing style, but it got the job done. He references a lot of letters written by Mozart, his father, and others, so that kind of made it more interesting. I was really interested in the relationship between Mozart and his father. I don't think this was something that was really touched on in "Amadeus." But it's been awhile since I saw it, so I could be wrong. I didn't spend much time on the website. Unfortunately, I didn't really have time. Maybe there are some interesting resources there. The author of the book mentions that Mozart's wife's second husband, Georg Nikolaus Nissen, wrote a biography of Mozart in 1828 that is "the most substantial biography to date." Hmm... wonder if I can find a copy...

I loved this book so much! I had it as a kid, but don't really remember reading it, but I recently read it for my Children's Literature class and I absolutely loved it. The story is great, the characters are beautiful, and the writing is fantastic.

Easy summer read and just what I needed. I enjoyed reading this book in the last 24 hours or so.
