Bought a copy for a colleague in the English department, but she hated it. Don't know what happened to mine. Wish I had it, for one thing, I want to reread the part about the floating carnivorous island or whatever it was. This book, with its narrator's promise to "prove the existence of god," polarized a bookgroup discussion, but we've since patched things up.

This is a surprisingly bittersweet entry into the Artemis Fowl series. Artemis plans one last adventure that goes horribly wrong and threatens the future safety of humans and fairies alike. His magical and technologically superior fairy friends agree to help him out of this jam, at the cost of wiping his mind of all memories that fairies exist. Not only are we in for another rollicking good adventure as Artemis and co attempt to break into the most secure vault human technology can throw at them, but this time the high risk stakes have consequences. In the previous two books, the stakes were certainly high, but despite a few twists and complications our protagonists have managed to pull off their elaborate schemes. This time there are serious consequences for Artemis’ miscalculation, and, ominously looming over the whole story, the threat that Artemis and his human compatriots could lose all memory of their fairy friends and the impact these adventures have had on all their lives. It certainly adds an extra layer of tension above and beyond the usual high stakes in the Artemis Fowl series. Plus, without giving away spoilers, I will say that this book ends on a massive cliffhanger. In some respects, The Eternity Code feels like a second Act book – the Act that is traditionally the low point of a play, where the odds seem insurmountable and hope appears scant. But it’s well worth the payoff in the next book, The Opal Deception. I’m really enjoying re-reading this beloved series. 8 out of 10

A very lovely coming of age story, centering on Dottie, a child of divorced parents. The story is told in a series of nearly 100 vignettes, each of which is filled with wit and vulnerability. During the course of the novel, Dottie struggles with moving, poverty, an alcoholic stepfather, questioning her sexuality, race relations, playing sports, and her relationship with her mother, half-brother, and stepsister. Her character exhibits amazing grace and presence of mind as she continually questions the world around her.

Didn't love this has much as I'd hoped. The story is fascinating, but I felt it dragged on a bit. The method of story telling combining first person narrative, newspapers, letters, and poems seemed a bit clunky to me. But a fairly enjoyable read all told.

From the first page up 'til the last, I was completely engrossed and enlightened. I connected with the Codi character extremely. She was an overeducated achiever coming back to the town that scorned her. As the book progresses Barbara Kingsolver reveals the human flaws of the whole town. She also teaches you to live how you feel happy living and to ignore the world and their comments. This book is one that keep me guessing and left me with a realistic ending. Also, I recommend this to friends.
