Kundera has written a few great works (Unbearable Lightness of Being closely followed up by The Book of Laughter and Forgetting). Of his other novels I've read (this one and Identity), they are the product of a competent writer but nowhere near the same kind of accomplishment. Perhaps Kundera is simply more skilled with the more unconventional approach he uses in the former two. Or perhaps Farewell Waltz and Identity are elxamples of novels that lose something in translation. Regardless, Farewell Waltz seems to air-drop quality ideas and passages (the Diogenes/Socrates anecdote comes to mind) into a mediocre/over-the-top plot that is ripe with contrived dialogue. While I can't ignore it conceptually, the execution does not match his other work. Kundera seems to be fairly hit-or-miss.

I liked the book more than I thought I would, and I liked it more the further I read. The assault scene was a little hard to read. I do like the characters, and it's sad that there won't be any sequels. They seemed like a good team.
