A Reluctant Queen: The Love Story of Esther by Joan Wolf is a retelling of Esther's tale. The novel is told from the perspective of Esther who lives in Susa and has no worries as a young Jewish woman. But when her uncle Mordecai asks her to enter the harem and petition to be the king's next wife, she agrees. Esther does not believe it when the king chooses her, but he does. And even more so, is that she cannot believe that she has fallen in love with him. It's not just a tale of courage; it's a love story (hence the title). Esther struggles between being Jewish or Persian in a Persian world and how to follow God when she is alone. She doubts her fate and tries to give up her faith, but then realizes that what she wants doesn't matter, that she must save her race and keep her faith, that all she needs is God. She becomes quite a queen. It's a great love story that Wolf has put together here! I think that Esther must have been in love with her husband in the Bible. I'm really glad I read this book. I plan on reading more Biblical fiction about women.

Great treasure trove of bits and pieces for the Dune fan. Includes an alternate "early draft" of Dune that reveals much of Herbert's creative process at work. The only drawback is that it contains content by Herbert's son, who has taken up the story in a successful (yet poorly written) series of new novels.

I loved the first few books in this series but haven't quite managed to get into the last few. I felt like this one was plagued by random chunks of exposition (I have found a body! I will think about my own problems in an effort to catch readers up!) and anachronistic attitudes. It was all the more pointed because I started it just after I finished A Spy in the House. ** spoiler alert ** I can't say that this is my favorite Classic read. This was a book club selection. I hadn't read it before. It seems you either love this book or hate it. I was kind of inbetween. It took about 150 pages to really get into the story and the characters. For me, the story was pretty disturbing in the psychological aspects. Emma's deterioration to suicide is heart-breaking. Her total disregard of her child upsetting. I hated watching her change from a hopeful, young girl to a hardened disallusioned woman. I hated it when Hippo-guy was pressured into the surgery on his foot. And then Homais' no-chalant attitude after losing his leg. I can honestly say that I didn't particularly like any of the characters. I can appreciate the author for giving me a glimpse into a world that I couldn't conceive of by modern day standards. To be a woman, in those times, was so stifling. It made me wonder if Flaubert was describing the role of women and using it as device to critizie socitety for it's narrow views. Or if he was just describing norms of the time.

Not really my type of book, but I just listened to it on Playaway at the gym. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 because if someone likes this kind of book, it is probably ok. Some of Cabot's YA fiction is much better. Yet again, another vampire book, but not well written. I'd recommend C. Harris or the Twilight books instead, if you are looking for "vampires lite".

okay, so my reading level was a little beyond where this book was reaching, but i've always been a sucker for an easy read, and hey, this is like chick-lit for youngsters! ada is adorable. you can't help but love her, and man, i will never forget her balancing on the roof to save her cat. this was also one of those books that drove home the sacrifices you have to make for your sport/dream/whatever, and i realized i was destined to be an underachiever. a well-read underachiever, but one nonetheless.
