Very like John Irving (whom I love) and similarly bursting with humanity, but moves more quickly from scene to scene. Only downside for me was that (perhaps because I was reading it in one hour chunks) I forgot who was who and how they related on a few occasions (so maybe the number of characters could have been pared back?), but I stuck with it and enjoyed it.

I just re-read this. A good way to spend your Sunday.

I recently finished this book. It reminds me of my friends', and of my own, twenty-something coming-of-age experiences in New York City.

I have a very distinct memory of reading this book in one sitting in the baseball glove lounge at Vanderbilt. This book will wrap you up in a different world for a while. It's painful and powerful.

Wow, what an amazingly touching and unforgettable story! I didn't imagine I would be so impacted by this book as I was. Can't wait to share for book club this month :)

My husband saw the cover and noted how Elephant looks like a blue Dick Cheney on Prozac. After that, my mind was pretty... well, distracted. Still, this is a sweet and classy story for the lil' kiddies.

This is a very compact love story between two guys who meet as kids and kept each other in their hearts for about twelve years. They come together to deal with the death of someone important to both of them. Jonah believes he is damaged by his past, Christian is a meek, kind soul waiting for the right love to come his way. Cameron Dane is a tight writer whose work stands up to poor editing.

This novel, superficially and fundamentally, is a novel about a pair of people who have spent too much time together and have therefore become strangers to one another. There is nothing new in this and it was an especially popular subject in the era in which it was published (the selfish 60s, the solipsistic 70s). But how it's handled, this oft and over plowed ground, is why it's read (in this case) still. Fox has written, in Desperate Characters, a novel that is all frustration and disappointment -- without ever making the reader (in 1970, 1980, in 2000 or 2050) feel frustrated or disappointed.
