** spoiler alert ** It was a fascinating combination of history and present. It also included witches, daemons and vampires and the story line is very intriguing. It was hard to stop reading. It's a cliff hanger, though!

If you enjoy literary short fiction or love Australia, you ought to read this. My job takes me to Queensland every couple of years, and I always look for Australian writers when I'm in the bookstores there. This is a book I came away with on my last trip, and it was the kind of lucky find every reader hopes for. The Bodysurfers is Australia in miniature, a collection of short stories following different members of a single family across several generations, mostly in the suburbs and beach towns around Sydney. The writing can remind you of both Ellen Gilchrist and Raymond Carver, but it's pure Aussie, with a surf-scented wind and the morning cries of currawongs rising from the page. Most of the twelve stories are less than twenty pages long, and it's an ideal book for reading in quick snatches over a few days. The subjects include finely drawn portraits of families at play and in turmoil, the spectacular downfall of small-town heroes, the rambling candor of a sex criminal who's spent much of his life in prison, the role of fish venom in budding romance and a snapshot of the last days of a once-celebrated explorer who helped open the continent's interior from the back of a camel. Really a wonderful book, and the back blurb of my edition says it's well loved in Australia, with adaptations for film, television, radio and theater. It definitely deserves a readership beyond Australia.

** spoiler alert ** This is a really fun book (free via podcast, or download) -- I haven't quite finished it yet -- been listening to it with my wife via podcast -- but I am enjoying it enough that I purchased of copy of the physical book recently to keep / read / loan to people. It's about a bunch of people with low-powered superpowers in a world with heroes / villains. They're sort of outcasts of their society. *** mild spoiler alert *** The main character's superpower, for instance... (scroll down if you want to see -- you find out within 8 pages) Her superpower is that no one can take anything she owns away from her. She runs a bar where the chef's superpower is that she can cook incredibly, and her waitress's superpower is that she can't drop a bar tray.

On my spirituality kick still, this book came at such a great time and I honestly couldn't put it down. Good night-stand, 40 pages a night type deal, really exploring the connections between how we eat and how we treat our spirits. I appreciated Roth's jumps between explaining her theories and her experiences leading retreats and the personal stories of women on the retreat. It wasn't too preachy-orthodox, she definitely uses God in the more ethereal sense that I can access. But got me thinking and being a bit more conscious at least when I choose the food I eat and WHY I am choosing it. After reading a lot of books about food in the last few years, it was nice to connect food to something bigger. Go read it!

Isabel Allende is one of the planet's best living writers. This is another fine title in her canon. Not much else to say...

I've been on a Jeffery Deaver kick lately and I'm enjoying the stories. I like the character development, the suspense and the plots. The Cold Moon is a Lincoln Rhyme book and has the usual suspects as well as a new character, for me, of Kathryn Dance. (I probably should check the spelling since I listen on audio book). Dance is a kinesiology specialist - a human lie detector. Sometimes Deaver spends a little too much time explaining the science or the technology but overall he keeps me enthralled.
