Most people thinks this book is just for children, but it is not. When I read it I was 25 years old and enjoyed every bit of it, you can't help smiling while you turn page after page.

Since I've suffer severe "insomnia"...I read this wonderful piece of literary genius during the middle of the night. Alice Hoffman has written a hypnotic and mesmerizing novel with 'The Drowning Season'. I was sorry to see this novel end! From back cover: "On a secluded waterfront estate on the North Shore of Long Island, a matriarch named Esther rules over her clan. But in spite of her sharp tongue and manipulative ways, she cannot quite keep control over her charges. Her son, Phillip, routinely tries to drown himself each summer; her granddaughter sneaks cigarettes and dreams of escape. Esther has hired Cohen, a Russian landscaper, to watch over the family as well as the grounds. But Cohen has been watching Esther as well. And his love for her is growing wild enough to uproot them all..."

Benedick and Beatrice are what make this play for me, their back and forth is verbal dueling of the highest degree. And it's one of those relationships you see everywhere when you and another girl tease each other so often that all your friends are almost sick of it and say stuff like, "When the hell are y'all gonna stop fighting and just hook up?" Don Pedro is also a fine fool of a character, a drunken fool who moves the action until his brother moves his own action. Don't quite understand why they're so non-chalant about Don John and the army he's brought to Messina in the last line though but hell they'll be a lot better off and ready to fight in the morning when they're all hung over. The false accusation story line and lines that result from this in acts 3-5 is what brought this play down a bit for me in my esteem. I just felt that Claudio and crew were a little too over the top for not having seen Hero's face with this other man.

Refreshing to have read a very entertaining dark fantasy novel with a male lead, as most that I've been reading have been females. Also, having seen the short lived SciFi (SyFy) series, it was interesting to see the inspiration. Totally recommended.

I enjoyed the main character of this book Kate Daniels. Put a hold on her newest book but was sad to realize that she has only written 2 books. Oh well, I'm sure there will be more.

I haven't read anything by Stephenson I didn't enjoy. The Diamond Age is really my kind of book--futuristic tech, adventure, philosophy, big ideas. It happens 100 or so years in the future where nanotech is the norm--meaning objects are designed by machines called "matter compilers" that do just that--take designs by nanotech engineers and build/compile them into objects. In this future the world is divided up into different clans ("philes"), the predominant "philes" being the New Victorians and the Chinese. The story revolves around a nanotech engineer, John Hackworth, who builds a "primer"/book meant to educate young Vitorian women, and a poor girl, Nell, who happens upon the book. I can't really say any more without giving the plot away, but an original and exciting read. Like all of Stephenson's books there are bizarre moments and slow moments, so it's not without it's flaws but all in all a great read. Also, as I found out later, it won the Hugo Award (sci-fi book of the year) in 1996.

I found this book challenging in an odd way. I enjoyed the weaving of personal story with research & theory about the evolution of human relationship with dogs. I loved the stories about Merle and what was a truly unique relationship between man and dog. I think Ted's view of Merle and how they led lives of seeming equals, made me look at the expectations and assumptions in my relationship with my dog. And I feel conflicted because I know we diminish our animals by keeping them as pets, but feel unable to change much about that situation given where I live and a concern for the safety of my dog. I wish I could let him roam; I wish I could walk him without a leash; yet a part of me takes comfort in the simplicity of our relationship and my role as his caregiver. This book will definitely make me consider more thoughtfully our relationship, his life and what I can do to provide more experiences for enriching his emotional and mental life. I also found the end of the book difficult to read given the loss of my previous dog a year ago and how that played out. Without revealing too much, I know I have some guilt about the choices I made, but also realize I did what was appropriate for our situation. All I can say is, Merle was an amazing dog!
