I love this series! It's fun; good plots, wonderful characters - what's not to love about a family who is steeped in Shakespeare and all of whose names come from the plays?! - and romance! The time period and main characters are similar to Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody mysteries: headstrong, unconventional female character that drives the equally headstrong and unconventional male character to distraction in more ways than one. But the focus of the stories are different, and since the E.P. Peabody series is one of my all time favorites, I love this one too!

If she were anyone else, Ann Bronte would be highly admired, but she is relegated to being Charlotte and Emily's sister. While I admire Emily's artistry more, I walk away more satisfied from Tenant then from Wurthering. A realistic early depiction of alcoholism and abusive relationships that was well ahead of it's time

I absolutely loved this book: the vignettes are superb. You get so many vivid snapshots of life from the perspective of the women, from the perspective of the observer, and from outside perspectives. She plays with form and makes a sonnet have life again. Its like form springs to life in her hands!

This is masterful writing, wonderfully-rounded characterisation, huge scope and tied together with a massive emotional kicker of a conclusion. Took me ages to read it, but totally rewarding experience.

If you have ever wished that your inhibitions and insecurities could take a hike, pay close attention to this very lovely and voluptuous main character. Carlisle may be the girl you never want to see your son bring home, but she sure is a blast to know. She owns her sexuality, and makes no apologies or excuses, not even to her stuck up sister and mother. I love that about her, and got a total kick out of her brazen attitude and honesty. This was interesting throughout, and had a different sort of tone that I can't quite identify, but enjoyed very much. I am certain that if I had read this as a kid that it would have been branded into my soul as a joyously spooky book. I liked the characters and found the relationships incredibly touching. The opening of the book might just scare the hell out of any child, but other than that it would certainly be suitable for any kid that could handle the first Harry Potter or anything of that ilk. Very happy I read this and will explore Gaiman's works a bit further from time to time. Tempted to give this 5 stars rather than 4.

I have read most of her books and they are really good story lines.

Author's first book published by North Point Press in 1989. According to then publisher/now husband this was one of two manucripts that came in "over the transom" (unsolicited) which he published (the other was "Ghost Dance" by Carole Maso now a Professor at Brown in Providence RI). Both were first time authors and made a significant splash with the arrival of their first novels. "Failure To Zigzag" is a thinly veiled story of growing up in a surreal family situation. A them that she fully reveals in her memoir "A Pocket History Of Sex In The Twentieth Century" published in 2009.

Read it again on my trip to France. Even better when you have seen Paris. After touring the way out-of-control opulence of Versailles you can see why the starving people were so angry, and after touring the creepy Conciergerie you get a good feel about what it was like to be condemned to a close shave by with Madame Guillotine. A powerful, albeit bloody, good read.
This story follows two sisters who live through a tragic childhood. The story is told from their alternating points of view. Since they are so different, this helps the reader understand the characters. Very touching story! ***This is my book club pick for April 2011.***
