I can't believe it took me this long to read a book that has received so much hype, but reading it was certainly worth the wait. While I've enjoyed every book we've read this semester, I can qualify The Hunger Games as the sole book out of the seven that transcends all the demographics of which we've been so conscious. It's a brilliant piece of social commentary disguised as young adult literature, and I hope it reaches audiences beyond young adults because the message seems to be more for them. As a reader, I struggled to accept the concept of the Games itself--that the entire country of Panem could be so complacent about an annual death match orchestrated by its leaders. The book brought out in me what clearly was brought out in so many of the Capitol residents, Gamemakers, and leaders: an intrigue in the idea of fighting and death. Even though my conscience was telling me that these games were wrong, I was more fascinated than I was empathetic, which is one of the Capitol's many problems. By the end of the Games I forgot that this whole idea is so convoluted, and I was more concerned about who would die and how. The book, by design, intentionally pulls out the savagery in its readers. As a teacher, I think this book would be a goldmine to teach. Even though Panem is supposed to represent a futuristic world with absurd people, places, and things, it portrays a kernel of reality in the world right now. The difference is that the Capitol mandates fighting to the death, yet in real life, we do it anyways without having to be forced to do so. Certain people of the world are motivated by what will make the most money (Katniss changing who she was for the sponsors), easily emotionally swayed in a very predictable fashion (the Capitol audience when Katniss and Peeta were artificially in love), and care more about demonstrating that they have control rather than using that control for the good (the Capitol). Futuristic elements aside, this book is the real deal--maybe more real than many of us will care to admit. I just hate that Katniss and Peeta could never reveal why they really ate the berries because it is the single most compelling part of the book.
