I can't believe it took me this long to read a book that has received so much hype, but reading it was certainly worth the wait. While I've enjoyed every book we've read this semester, I can qualify The Hunger Games as the sole book out of the seven that transcends all the demographics of which we've been so conscious. It's a brilliant piece of social commentary disguised as young adult literature, and I hope it reaches audiences beyond young adults because the message seems to be more for them. As a reader, I struggled to accept the concept of the Games itself--that the entire country of Panem could be so complacent about an annual death match orchestrated by its leaders. The book brought out in me what clearly was brought out in so many of the Capitol residents, Gamemakers, and leaders: an intrigue in the idea of fighting and death. Even though my conscience was telling me that these games were wrong, I was more fascinated than I was empathetic, which is one of the Capitol's many problems. By the end of the Games I forgot that this whole idea is so convoluted, and I was more concerned about who would die and how. The book, by design, intentionally pulls out the savagery in its readers. As a teacher, I think this book would be a goldmine to teach. Even though Panem is supposed to represent a futuristic world with absurd people, places, and things, it portrays a kernel of reality in the world right now. The difference is that the Capitol mandates fighting to the death, yet in real life, we do it anyways without having to be forced to do so. Certain people of the world are motivated by what will make the most money (Katniss changing who she was for the sponsors), easily emotionally swayed in a very predictable fashion (the Capitol audience when Katniss and Peeta were artificially in love), and care more about demonstrating that they have control rather than using that control for the good (the Capitol). Futuristic elements aside, this book is the real deal--maybe more real than many of us will care to admit. I just hate that Katniss and Peeta could never reveal why they really ate the berries because it is the single most compelling part of the book.

This book was hard to read at first but it hit a point where I couldnt put it down. There is one page that actually blew me away. That has never happened before or since. Its a thinly veiled story of his life. Wonderful!

Psychologist Joe O’Loughlin has been (mostly) loyal to his wife. He loves his daughter, and he and his wife have been hoping for years to add another child to their family. But suddenly his placid life becomes stormy. First, there’s his newly diagnosed Parkinson’s disease. Then there’s the matter of Joe’s having lied to the police about his connection to a murdered woman. Plus he’s left damning evidence behind in the apartment of a second murdered woman. When the police begin to put two and two together, Joe eludes their dragnet and uses his considerable brain power to try to crack the case himself. That’s when all the clues point to his best friend, and Joe’s fate appears sealed. Or is it?

The cache of typos in the introduction aside, reading this was quite fun. For a while, anyway. Eventually, it felt a little redundant and like the author was going for some painfully obvious examples (though The Bard's less popular plays do get more attention than usual, which was neat). I just couldn't help but feel like there was a better way to organize this book to give it a little more original thought and depth. Still, it's about Shakespeare's fondness for and adept inclination toward the naughty. And anything's worth a go if it explores the delightfully dirty undertones of Willy Shakes.

non adoro kafka...
** spoiler alert ** I loved this book. I thought that it was a great way of showing that no matter the circumstance, everything is still always about power and control. Class and status disparities soon emerge between the different animal species, with the pigs being "in charge". The pigs manipulate and twist how the other animals think and see things. The pigs teach themselves how to read and write, and eventually start wearing clothes. The pigs gain all control, and the other animals have no choice but to follow suit. As the story says, "All animals are equal, some animals are more equal than others".

This book is both one of the best I’ve read in a long time and quite disappointing. The excellent part has to do with Rebecca and Adam’s loss of their daughter—and the author treats the subject with sensitivity and heart-wrenching realism. The disappointing part is that a considerable portion of the last half of the book is a short story written by a friend of Rebecca’s. I always feel a bit cheated when an author slips a basically unrelated story into a narrative (A.S.Byatt does this as well). Is this the only way to get the piece published? Did the author run out of steam with the main plot? If I were writing an essay for a college English class I could draw strong parallels between the main narrative and the short story and probably justify it’s inclusion—but really—I’d rather not.

I didn't realize that this was a series until I began reading it. It was an easy, light read. I liked that the recipes she referred to were included in the book...there were some in there that I had never heard of before and sound very yummy and interesting.
