this one was inspiring. it gives multiple accounts of children in the holocaust, not only involved but also those who were affected by it indirectly. it showed me that everyone deals with war differently. some rise to the occasion, some don't.

Death is the narrator of this story of Nazi Germany and a little girl – the book thief --- with whom Death becomes fascinated. Stolen books – or more accurately, saved books – become a kind of anchor for young Liesel. Her first book, The Gravedigger’s Handbook, becomes the primer from which she learns to read. She retrieves a book from a Nazi book-burning, then begins stealing books from other places. In one of the most poignant scenes of the book, Liesel and her family are hiding a Jewish friend in their basement, who literally removes the words from a copy of Mein Kampf and creates a touching book for Liesel in its place. Except for the introductory pages, which were apparently Death’s attempt at being poetic, the book is beautifully written. Read this book.

not as good as Secret Life of Bees. The story was good, but the characters weren't likeable. They were unwilling to face their problems. i would definitely give sue monk another try, though.

I thought it was a good book about how one kid spends his summer.

I actually wasn't fond of this book at all. I don't know if it is the fact that i have a young daughter, but I just don't get what the big deal is about it. I didn't hate it, but definitly didn't love it.

His masterpiece. Read CHOLDERA first, though. It'll ease you into this book if you're not familiar with magical realism.

I know I'm suppose to like this book, but I don't. I read it when I was younger (didn't like it) and this past summer (still didn't like it) just in case I missed something. It's frustrating because I do empathize with Holden's adolescent philosophical and ethical turmoil. I'm touched by Holden's interactions with children...there's an aching in those adult/child intersections that Salinger captures really well (but I think he does it best in "A Perfect Day for Bananafish). Unfortunately, my heart just doesn't break for Holden Caulfield and his problems.

A comprehensive, if slightly uneven collection of Lester Bangs' Criticism-as-literature music reviews, short stories and essays. Bangs is to critical writing as Andy Kaufman was to comedy. His review of "Astral Weeks" by Van Morrison will break your frigid hipster heart.
