2.5-3 stars. nah, I didn't fall for the story. I loved the drawing though, it's what's saved the rating. The drawing alone is a 5 star, but the story is...not that good. Read "Valhalla", if you can find it. Awesome comic about Odin, Tor and all the other residens in Valhalla meeting death, monsters and orchs.

I read this as a palate-cleanser, so it's ironic that the very first page left a sour taste in the mouth - the airlords are "fierce Mongolians, who, as scientists now contend, had in their blood a taint not of the earth". There are two extremely dull chapters that are essentially essays describing the technology of each side, but most of the book is the usual meticulously-described Antony Rogers derring-do... By the end, though, you realise that Rogers is leading a war of genocide - his purpose is to eradicate every man, woman and child of the Han from the face of the Earth, destroying their cities, burying them beneath rock, murdering them mercilessly. The narrator acknowledges this awful bloodthirstiness, but explains it to be warranted by the evil nature of the Hans. Norman Spinrad once wrote a book - The Iron Dream - as if by an alternative universe Hitler who found his way to America and science fiction. I haven't read it yet, but it's hard to imagine it sticks more closely to Hitler's ethos than this book does. I'm not one for praising science fiction for predicting the future - when it happens it's nice, and when it doesn't people take it to be a failing of the genre, and either way writers are often just popularising scientists' ideas - but Nowlan's description of the Hans at work at home, before their computer screens, ordering their new trousers with a button press, seems remarkably prescient of the internet age.

I really wanted to like this book--and enjoyed parts of it--but the characters aren't quite compelling enough to sustain its length and general plotlessness.

This is one of my top five favorite books. It's hilarious, insane, and monumentally creative.

This was a book I wanted to hate. I picked it up from my mom's bedside table and labeled it immediately "A mom book" deemed worthy of bathroom reading only. (Sorry mom.) To me, "Mom books" are overly-sentimental, too plot-driven, and contain some type of character who sweeps the old frumpy, bored, over-worked, over-stressed housewife/doctor/mother/lawyer character, off her feet. Okay, so this The Lovely Bones was a tad too precious at times, but it kept my interest and attention. And it was different. I appreciate writers who experiment and try new things, and this book was an exploration of possibilities beyond even surrealism. Try it on. It's short.

My first thought upon finishing the graphic novel was how much more impressive the movie seems now. It is a really good film in its own right, but even more so in that it followed the source material so closely. There are many passages were the dialogue was used almost word for word. I loved the alternate-reality setting of the 1980s, and the fact that the "superheroes" are so real. The plot itself is an intriguing one, right down to the vexing issue of how to deal with costumed vigilante justice in a real world, where the heroes themselves have real problems. Now I need to watch the movie again.

Excellent character development, as might be expected when the entire plot takes place in the span of a single day. This is the first fiction book I've read that deals with issues of 9-11 and the Iraq War and I found it somehow comforting to see a novelist grappling with these issues - a welcome break from the non-fiction that is the daily news. Elements of the plot seem a bit far-fetched in retrospect but at the time I was reading the book, everything flowed so smoothly and the writing was so captivating that I had a hard time putting the book down. Set in London in February 2003, the day of the huge global anti-war protests.
