This book makes a lot of sense to me. It shows how disabilities can overlap each other which happens more often that not. It is helping me meet some challenges and I feel better equipped to help my son.

Everything to be said about this book has already been said; I'll just say that I loved it because it made me go wildly crazy for a fictional character for the first time since Gilbert Blythe; because I found the scope, and David Mitchell's imagination, astounding; and because I enjoyed each of the nested stories, even the ones that jarred for the first few pages (except Luisa Rey, which I still can't forgive. A pastiche of bad writing is still bad writing).

** spoiler alert ** I didn't like the beginning because I thought it read like an essay instead of a story and it was pretentious. Once the adventure began, I was hooked. I really enjoyed it. And then the end ruined it for me. The only reason one story was better than the other is one had details and the other didn't. Any story of survival can be majestic and I really feel like I wasted my time listening to someone just make stuff up instead of tell the truth with detail and wonder. Maybe I'm just a stickler for truth, but I wanted to know what really happened instead of the "better" story. I couldn't stand the book after the ending, which is such a shame because I enjoyed the story so much before.

at worst this is adolesant rap mimicking crap, but at best, it transends structure and rhyme, turning the everyday into the poetic and the poetic into the everyday, Lemn chews up world history, and personal history, and weaves it into little states of social commentary, whit and invective, never more dense than they need to but just every so often too sparse, and repeated themes some times desend into repeated lines, probably great in public performance but not so great on the page, overall none the less fantastic and every diamond needs a little dirt to make gleam that brighter.

This was absolutely entrancing, an almost magical look at the Viet Nam War and it's aftermath by an American woman who lived much of it. Her friendships with the peasants who fought and lived and worked and somehow survived in those perilous times are testaments to the healing and beauty to be found in the laying aside of enmity and distrust between former enemies. Her rich cultural and historical snapshots are infused with humor, insight, camaraderie, compassion, and if I could give a few books 5+ stars, this would be one.
