This is a modern day tale of Beauty & the Beast although it's been technology enhanced. I wasn't sure I was going to like it for that reason. I figured why mess with a good thing and the original was a good thing. However, once I started reading it I found myself laughing at little things that happened, smiling to myself and talking to the characters in the book. Even though we all know the story, know what happens, what the ending will be the author added enough change as to make it interesting. This book shows how important looks are in our society. It shows how some people will even base there choices for friends or a mate on how "beautiful" that person is on the outside. I think all teenagers should read this or something similar to this.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I spent more time with this than I usually do with fiction, but Austen's prose and characterization are just too good to rush through. The internal emotional subtlety Austen elucidates while retaining her witty narrative distance is remarkable, and I can't wait to read more of her works. Emma next?

This is my favorite book all year! I felt like I heard my own voice in her writing and passions... This is a very entertaining read and also very beautiful writing about a spiritual quest for truth and self. Some people who may not be spiritual-seekers may find the middle section difficult or dull, but it is an important part of the author's journey and so ultimately worth reading.

I can't really write a long review of this memoir. No, it's simply not going to be possible. Why? Well, simply put, you need to read it for yourself. This is a unique book. Not your normal war memoir. When you think (or atleast when I think) of a war memoir, you are thinking that it will be about all the details and dramatic, gut wrenching events. Not this memoir. This is a memoir of a Viet Nam Marine Corp vet who remembers the fond times he had as a soldier of war. He remembers his happenings of the things that will make you laugh. And of the things that will make you cry. It's an interesting account from a new point of view. Oh sure, there are going to be some gut wrenching events in this story. But the way that Barry tells his accounts is stunning. He turns it into an entertaining read that anyone, not just military or memoir lovers. It's a 4 star book in my opinion. I wish more memoirs were like this one, as this one really held my attention with both the book itself and the author's accounts of Nam. Well done, Fixler and thank you for your service!

I went off fantasy literature a while ago, but when it is as well told and well crafted as this, I can make exceptions. On one level American Gods is a modern reworking of an epic that combines a number of legends and mythologies. At another level, the work employs these legends to explore notions of commitment, faithfulness, honour, duty and modern society all through Gaiman's slightly quick-witted and wry world view. At the very final level, the novel shows that these myths are nothing more than stories - which does not mean Gaiman tries to discredit them but more to put them in their place. Gods and heroes are in the end there for our amusement.
