This is a nice primer on Mormon polygamy. He does lack a thesis, but does paint a nice narrative picture of Mormon polygamy. I'd call this the first book any student of Mormon polygamy should read.

I stayed up until 2 am finishing this book! It was my favorite kind of story...well-written, interesting plot, developed characters, mystery, magic, and romance thrown in. True, it is a bit slow-moving, and true- the ending is not a grand reveal like I predicted, but everything else is so lovely that I forgave that oversight. FINALLY! A novel that lived up to it's 1,000's of good reviews! I have hope for humanity once more!

I started reading this awhile ago. I got partway in and could see where it was headed. I really don't enjoy reading about people throwing away everything that they love, or everything that they should love -- I really don't. That's probably why I loathed The Awakening (a.k.a. The Want to Scream and Hurl Across the Room) so much. This one seemed to be headed in the same direction, and it didn't even have the redeeming quality(?) that the person doing throwing her life away is an entirely unsympathetic character.

This is a great book for helping students in my film class understand the mythic structure. I only wish I'd started it earlier in the year! A terrific read as a writer and as a teacher!

First read as an undergrad in college, maybe 1974 or 1975. Still one of my all time favorites even though I'm more cognizant of it's flaws now. I still recommend it to just about everyone I meet, especially readers who like hard boiled mystery and great writing.

Mark is a 24 years old architect, cute and adorable, and virgin. He has had a loving family even though a bit old: in fact he was raised by his grandparantes and they accepted his omosexuality, but lived in a small cabin among a forest, so it was a little difficult for Mark to find a lover. So now, he lives in the city but he is still shy and wary when it is time to love. But one morning, during a brief vacation in his cabin, he meet a camper, Joe: big, muscular and very handsome, Joe is also very open in his interest for Mark. But he has also a gold ring on his hand, so someone is waiting him back home. But destiny decided for them, and Joe is lightly injured and loses part of his memory: he remembers to have someone at home, but he doesn't remember whom, and what is their relationship. And now he has near Mark, and Mark is so innocent and exciting... Mark is a lovely character, all blush and eyes. He is naivee and open, charmingly innocent. Joe is more mature and aware, he perspire sex, and to Mark's innocent eyes he is like a feast on two legs... This is a tender story with no much drama or conflict. Funny and enjoyable, maybe a fault I can find is the pink world in which our characters live, where omosexuality is accepted without problems and where a man can live in peace between his family warm embrace... it's an ideal world and sometimes is relaxing to read about it. http://elisa-rolle.livejournal.com/11...

The uncompromising bravo and call to excellence in this book is quite appealing. Unfortunately the story is not about excellence. It is a story against compassion. It is a lecture on how to make oneself miserable.
