I enjoyed this book very much! Especially the first 70% of the book was simply wondrous. There's a great balance of story set in historical England interconnected with a magical fantasy world. I found the plight of the young heroine, Coriander, highly engrossing. In the closing sections of the book though the climax seemed rather rushed, the last section felt like an overlong epilogue and the plot seemed to tie up a little too neatly. I particularly like Gardner's emotive and perfectly fitting descriptions of various characters or scenes. And she shows a strong visual creativity which she is able to adequately paint with her words. I quite like the font that this books is set in too ... especially the capital Q and the cute diagonal hyphens. Unfortunately I couldn't find anywhere, where the book says which font it uses :( I'm most interested to read future works by Sally Gardner.

If Bill Plympton illustrated Jon Stewart's America: The Book, but in Spanish and about Mexico. Yup.

I absolutely loved this book. It is a story of Lithuanian people that were sent to Siberia by Stalin. I loved reading this story about a part of history that is not well known.

Excellent. I really enjoy all Philippa Gregory's book on the Tudors.

I'm giving this three stars because I wanted something light and quick while recovering from surgery, and this fits the bill. It's an entertaining story - kept my interest enough to want to finish the book. The writing is better than average, the story fun but not too taxing on the brain. Recommended for rainy days, the beach and housebound persons.

What makes people change their minds? On deeply entrenched issues? And why do people hold on to views that are so obviously morally repulsive--such as segregation? These questions are why I'm reading through Taylor Branch’s Martin Luther King trilogy. The answer to the first is that it’s really, really hard. It takes an incredible amount of energy, time, money, manpower, pain, and personal sacrifice. And very often despite all that some people never change their minds. People cling to morally repulsive views out of fear, power, and greed, and justify themselves by living in denial. Branch spent nine years researching and writing this book and his hard work comes across on the page. In many ways, writers like Branch and Robert Caro set the standard for how history books should be written.

Why can't we choose half stars???? I'd give this book a 3.5 -- nothing deep, but I did eat it up and it wasn't too horribly predictable -- didn't know all the details until the end. I would read more about these characters if I could.

This is a fun book. Gaiman does a great job of weaving old myths and new gods together. Plus the idea of setting it in Wisconsin (House on the Rock) is perfect. You'll dig his depiction of Odin...
