My husband and I recommend this book to everyone who plans to deploy to the Middle East. Greg Mortenson's true life story is simply amazing. To say more will give away some of the book. But if you like adventure stories, this is definitely one to read. It will also open your eyes to the kinds of action that will help promote peace in the Middle East. It's so good, I've read it twice.

I've been saying to people - it would be very easy to reduce the illustrations and design aspects of this novel to gimmickry, if they weren't backed up by seriously good writing. Which they are, so it ends up being something right up my alley - a great novel with interesting, quirky visual elements. There were turns of phrase that made me warm inside. The characterization of TS was wonderful - though he and his parents are the only real characters, I think, and his parents are only half-known, in the way that children know their parents. (The rest of the characters are just foils, not real people.) That makes this such an insular, and yet also a universal experience. The lack of temporal markers in Montana was curious only when they did show up - Sour Gummi Tape. Nostalgia for cowboys, for kids growing up in the open, for riding the rails, even - coming up against the real allure of McDonalds and also the length of shorts - he wants this to be timeless or boy-out-of-his-own-time? - that I questioned this made it weird. Also, the parts of his mother's journal were interesting and important, but like AS Byatt, I found myself wanting to skip it and get back to the real stuff (though I didn't, because he was far less tiresome than she is). The plot is shaky in parts, and the pacing is irregular...these are things I'm willing to chalk up to "first-time novelist". The ending doesn't quite match the beginning (I know it's highly implausible from the start, but a real-seeming situation makes its way into movie-script hijinks by the time TS arrives in Washington), but the entire trip was definitely worth it in order to know the voice of TS. The core of what's there - a boy's becoming a man, family relationships, how to get the inside of your idiosyncratic head to relate in some real way to the universal outside...in addition to the fate of "science" as a pursuit in our time - all that is good. Um, also, TS includes within his top nine movies: "Flight of the Navigator", "The Explorers", "Batteries Not Included", "Sneakers", and "Microcosmos"...(a) this guy is definitely from my era. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with next.

Put this one down around page 200, but I got the feeling it was just going to get worse and worse as it went on. I have a feeling Stephen King ghost-wrote this one while Ellis was busy off somewhere being pretentious and hip. I was a bit intrigued about the "Patrick Bateman" character... maybe they'll make a shitty movie of it one day and I can find out that it was "all in his mind." Hollywood, and the masses, just can't seem to get enough of that twist.

I was expecting a how things are done book. This is more a history of crafts book. It was fine, but not what I was wanting or expecting.

Maybe it is a little harsh to only give it one star, but the last half (third?) of the book was so ANNOYING that I completely gave up on it. I have so little patience for whiny women who have a wonderful marriage but they just happen to meet an eligible (rich) bachelor who through no fault of hers, I mean it was just innocent flirting, falls in love with her, but she stands her ground and says she is happily married, so they are just best buddies, completely platonic, nothing wrong with that, not even when they go spend a weekend somewhere together because really they are just friends really I promise and then she is sooooooo conflicted what to do when he proposes because she loves her husband but what about this wonderful guy who is wooing her and come on it can't be wrong when it feels so right, right? But she finally under duress returns to her husband and then I'm supposed to feel like she is a heroine because what a sacrifice for her to give up her rich boyfriend to go back to her humble husband who she never stopped loving of course because she is a good girl like that. I don't know why I can't just read it like an entertaining story (I mean I watched soaps in college fhs) but it just grates on me and I can't stand it. But the first half of the book had a completely different conflict and if I overlooked the fact that the main character was flat and distant it was a somewhat pleasant and interesting story of an Irish immigrant finding her way. But then the end just killed it dead for me.

Nicely illustrated and good verse. Disappointed it doesn't mention the Creator, although a Christian parent can easily use it as a teaching tool.

The first in a series based on Jane Austen as an amateur sleuth, I ended up really loving this. I haven't read as much Austen as I'd like, but enough to want to give this series a try. As with Austen's novels, the language takes a little getting used to, but I was easily pulled into the story and enjoyed the ride.

fascinating. have been reading this book for almost 5 years now--almost as long as Hans Castorp spent in the Alps. i pick it up and put it down again--think it is really hard to absorb in a way--fundamental question of what sickness is--it's not as obvious an answer as one might think.
