Good book, but like so many stories, the twist at the end is what takes it from "meh" to "hmm... interesting".

A really helpful memoir from a wife whose husband succumbs to this awful disease, it's also beautifully and unusually written. I like the way it segued into poetry at times, and captured the fragmented way minds really work - an insight here, a worry there, a moment of joy or reminiscence. I read and critiqued some this book while it was being workshopped online, then I bought my own copy because I liked it so much.

This is one of the more popular browsing books in my library, eliciting sounds of dismay and disgust to all who turn its pages. Most recipes look nigh inedible, and all of them are shudderingly unfortunate. "Regrettable" doesn't even begin to cover it.

searching for emma and herself. i thought it had a happy ending for abby. for jake not so much even tho in the end he got his daughter back. he has to live with the fact that he gave up and he can't face abby because she had a stonger conviction than he did. when he see abby i think he see's his own failure.

** spoiler alert ** I really loved this book. It was powerful and emotional but so sad at the same time. I'm having a hard time rating it and I'm not sure how to put my feelings in to words. In reading other peoples reviews, this one really struck me and I have to say I this person wrote exactly what I was feeling. Susan wrote: While Hannah staunchly believes she gave people enough of a chance to intervene, it also becomes clear that to a point, she didn't really let anyone really know her at all, and so everyone was set to fail. While some of the wrongs committed by her former enemies are grave enough to perhaps merit the blackmail that follows (a second set of tapes are be released to the public if the original tapes aren't passed along as instructed), the reader feels the guilt, pain, regret, and helplessness of the narrator (who is one of the recipients) so keenly that the reader must question whether if the punishment in some cases isn't worse than the crime. One hopes that at the end, the teen reader would see the big waste of it all, the destruction of a life, the ruins of the lives left behind, the hollowness of a triumph under such conditions, the error all around (on Hannah's part as well as the others)--and not just the fact that the bad guys pay dearly at the end, but that's what a good discussion could bring out. I think this is a book that I would definitely like to reread and I think it could be even better on audio.

This anthology surpassed my expectations, and those were high. While there were a few stories that didn't quite work for me, the majority were entertaining at the least. Two things I especially appreciated: the nifty worldbuilding, and the fact that women were central characters with agency and action. The stories were not all lesbian erotica--which would have been fine, but I really love variety. All kinds of relationships here, including tragic, with most being female. Standouts for me were Rachel Manija Brown's "Steel Rider" and Amal El-Mohtar's "To Follow the Waves." I really liked NK Jemisin's The Effluent Engine" until the very end, and I thought Shweta Narayan's" The Padishah Begum's Reflections" a bravura piece that might have worked more powerfully if the compressed narrative were expanded out into a novel. I think that would be amazing.
