Interesting to see how characters continue to evolve through the series. A minor in one book is a major in another and vice versa. I do not know how she keeps them all straight in her mind!

I liked it, and was inspired enough by it and admire the author's passion (also now love her blog), but was hoping to love it and have it change my life. I was hoping to get more from it than the advice that I could also have a creativity-minded family without all the expense- all I have to do is find some super cute cabinet for free on the side of the road, and then commit to filling it with plants so I can start naturally dying material to make our own clothes. No problem right? Anyway, I really related to her introduction and identified with the author right away, but found the rest of the book to be fall short for both inspiration and practicality. I did however come away more resolved to find my own ways to be encourage imagination and simplicity within my home.

This book scared me to death! But I was somewhat disappointed with the ending.

This is one of those books that I liked a lot, but that I found distressing because there was no neat ending. That's right, people, I want my loose ends tied up! I admire the author's choice to make the book true to life, but life is sad.

Awesome!!!! Almost everyone in my Young Adult Lit class read this book in one day - because it was so awesome, not because they needed to have it read for class.

There was a lot to like about this book. Some of the characters were not nice, but they weren't the focus of the story, which was good. I really liked Holly, Liam and all of the people in the cooking class. I love to cook so that was a part of the motivation for reading this - now I want to try making my own pasta! Of course, being from Maine, I also like the idea of stories set here. And the author does, apparently, live in Yarmouth so she should know the area reasonably well. I think for the most part, I was ok with her characterizations and her fictional island. That said, what probably prevents me from giving this 4.5 stars is the fact that Portland is MY city. I lived and worked there for several years. We spent the early part of our marriage hanging out in Portland, and I don't think she painted the picture quite right. I think anyone who has never been there or who has only visited once might not find fault, but there were a couple things that just bugged me, things that I think misrepresent the reality that is living in or near Portland. First of all, even if you live in-town Portland, it takes more than 10 minutes to get anywhere. That's just the way it is. Portland is a busy little city and even if there isn't much traffic, you still have to find a place to park and then walk to wherever you're going. It's not the kind of trip you make to just 'pop into town'; I think that sends the impression to people that, while it is a city, Portland is like a small town. Yes and no. It feels that way, but it just isn't. Portland still has many of the annoying aspects of a city, it's just a lovely place to be so you don't tend to mind that as much. Second, and probably the one that sent me over the edge (of docking it a half-star) was the scene of the big, special date near the end. I won't say too much so as not to spoil anyone, but I want to set something straight: Portland does not have 30-story buildings. It will probably NEVER have 30-story buildings. I worked in one of the tallest buildings in Portland and at 9 stories, it was one of the few 'sky scrapers' in the city. You can see pretty much all the buildings of substantial height - and I don't think there is a single one over 12 stories - from I-295 as you drive through. A 30-story building would stand out like a huge, ugly, sore thumb and it doesn't fit with the character of the city, so it isn't even reasonable to estimate that one might possibly be built someday. Not happening - and I say that as someone who worked in the industry that builds those buildings. If you want to do that kind of work, you don't work in Portland or anywhere else in Maine. And, while I'm thinking about it, I also found their first 'date' to be unrealistic; you don't take a row boat out in the water near Portland to have a date where you expect to have wine and make out. Yeah, not realistic. But, again, if you'd never been there, you wouldn't know, right? So you can suspend your disbelief (because, hey, it seems plausible, right?) I think I'm feeling the same issue I did with another recent read where the author was a transplant to the area and just didn't quite 'get' it enough to bring across the real place. It's fine, I guess, except I'm pointing it out again here because, honestly, I think it does a disservice to a place when you're not portraying it properly. When I've never been somewhere, I suppose it doesn't bother me so much because I don't know. But when I have, well, I suppose I want to set the record straight. Overall, I liked the style, the perspective, her language and the characters and would definitely be willing to read more of her stuff.

Excellent story (non-fiction) of a young man's battle with Taurett's Syndrome, OCD and anxiety. With the help of his family, he is a true oversomer. Read it in one evening!

This is a great book for beginning readers. It has simple, repetitive words and usually just one or two sentences on each page. The illustrations are colorful and fun, and the overall text is very similar to Dr. Seuss' books for early readers, like One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Our girls really enjoy this story.
